The Savannah Tribune • Wednesday, April 17, 2024 9 Georgia Legislature Rushed and Passed More Voter Bills That Obstruct The Voting Process By Shirley B. James, Publisher of The Savannah Tribune Continued from Page 1 HB 1207 As the League of Women Voters of Georgia explains, “HB 1207 allows a reduction in the number of voting machines available on election day. It also lets poll watchers get closer to those counting ballots. The first part will result in longer lines at the polls and the second, more discomfort for those working to meet already tight deadlines for reporting.” Maya Homan with the Savannah Morning News adds that HB 1207 "... requires all election workers to be U.S. citizens, ... and [elimi nates] the requirement for poll ing places to maintain a ratio of one voting machine for every 250 voters. It also limits a can didate’s timeframe for review ing their information before it officially appears on a ballot, giving them a maximum of 24 hours to request any changes.” Fair Fight Action believes that HB 1207 "... gives poll watchers more ac cess, [and protection, and] makes it a felony (punishable by 1-10 years in jail and/or up to a $100,000 fine) to intimi date or interfere with any elec tion official OR a poll watch er. HB 974 HB 974 allows for the Secretary of State to devise a statewide electronic scanning system to record all ballots cast in any election and make them accessible on the SOS website for the public to view on the second Friday after an election by 5:00 pm. It even allows for more and more audits of elec tions than we already have which have already proven to be sufficient. Homan writes that “The measure [HB974], authored by state Rep. John LaHood (R-Valdosta), was designed to increase transpar ency and public confidence in election results throughout the state in response to a deluge of election deniers who have repeatedly claimed the 2020 presidential election was sto len.
