A,H.S. Has Seven
New Teachers
There are seven new members
of the Athens High School teach
ing staff this year.
Mrs. Hugh Stanley comes to
us from New Hanover High
School in Wilmington, N. C.,
where she was head of the Math
Department. She attended Shorter
College and Columbia University.
Our new art teacher, Mrs.
Pfister, taught at^ Walnut Hil
High School in Cincinnati, Oh
before she came to Athens. She
went to Ohio State University and
then the Cincinnati Art Academy.
Mrs. Wade Young moved here
from Columbus, 't-®,., where she
taught at South Columbus. She
received her degree in Education
from the Georgia Teachers Col
lege in Statesbor,,.
Mrs. Haley Smith taught last
at Magee Elementary School in
Revera, Calif. Besides going to
Eastern Nazarene College in Wol
laston, Mass., she has studied at
the New England Conservatory
cAMusic.
^wtrs. Walter Coupe comes here
mfci the greatest distance, hav
ing last taught on Guam in the
Mariana Islands. She went to the
College of the Pacific and the
University of California at
Berkeley.
Mrs. Farrell Hall, the new
typing teacher, taught at Newnan
High School in Newnan, Ga., be
fore coming here. She got her
degree in Business Education
fiiom Georgia State College for
Women in Milledgeville, Ga.
Mrs. Leslie Long taught in
Richmond Hill, Ga., last. Besides
going to Georgia Teacher’s College
at Statesboro, she attended the
University of Georgia.
All the new teachers are mar
ried, and their husbands are con
nected in some way with either
the University or the Navy Sup
ply School.
The new teachers seem to be
well-liked by all the students and
it is hoped that they will make
Athens their home indefinitely.
On Friday night, October 22,
1954, A.H.S. will hold its annual
Homecoming Festivities. Ann Cox,
“Miss Homecoming,” will be
crowned at the dance by Demaris
Fowler, Miss S.-F.C.A., and Rosa
lind David, Miss Senior Class.
During the half-time of the
Athens-Richmond Academy game,
“Miss Homecoming” and her two
attendants will be presented to
the spectators.

The A.H.S. Band began a color
ful season September 17 at the
Athens-Toccoa gaipe. There they
played the A.H.S. Fight Song
while Jeanne Ferguson, drum
majorette, and Sister Eberhart,
majorette captain, thrilled the
crowd with an exhibition of twirl
ing with fire batons. The major
ettes for this year include: Sis-
tej/^llgood, Jane Bradberry, Gail
i'd, Myrna Rose Robertson,
hayer Corker, Edith Molder,
1 Betsy Birchmore. Mary Mills, and
I Freda Maddox.
September 24, the band and
: majorettes went on two chartered
i buses to Monroe. There the major
ettes did a dance routine to “You,
You, You” while the band played
and formed a large revolving rec
ord in a juke box. Then the
jmajorettes twirled to “Mr. Touch
down U.S.A.” and the A.H.S.
Fight Song. The band marched
off the field to “Glory, Glory to
Old Georgia.”
At the beginning of school, the

glett, vice-president; Nancy Cog-
gin, librarian, and Betty Craw
ford, secretary-treasurer.

annually sponsored by the
S.-F.C.A. Each student, however,
is asked to give 25 cents toward
defraying the expenses.

New Students
Like Athens High
The 1954-55 school term began
at Athens High School on Sep
tember 7, with an increased en
rollment over last year of almost
100 students, the eighth grade
showing the largest per cent of
increase.
Welcome to all of the new stu
dents at A.H.S. If you need any
help just call on the upperclass
men.
Some of the new students were
interviewed and asked their
opinions and suggestions for im
provements at A.H.S.
Leah Allen, a tenth grader from
Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam,
Wise., said she likes A.H.S. and

son, along with the new' cheer
leaders, Carolyn Christian, Bar
bara DuPree, Linda Brown, Kay
Brown, and Ann Dillard, have
done a great deal since the be
ginning. of the football season by
boosting the morale and spirit of
the football players toward vic
tory.
With such a fine start, the
cheerleaders are sure to be a won
derful asset in all of the sport’s
activities for this school year.
S.-F.C.A. President John
(Squeaky) Simpson welcomed the
home room representatives to the
first meeting September 22 in the
audio-visual room. Stressing the
importance of the council In plan
ning school activities, he request
ed that each student be encour
aged to make suggestions to his
representative.
The council adopted the recom
mendation made by the executive
board to turn sponsorship of Col
lege Day and Career Day over to
the senior English classes. Stand
ing committees and homecoming
plans were approved.

Annual Staff Does
First Draft in Aug.
The first draft of the 19 54-55
Trojan has been completed and
is ready to be sent to the printer
for his corrections. This work
was done during the summer bv
a few members of the editorial
staff.
Since school started, there has
been a called meeting of this
staff and it has been organized.
