A short while since the News contained a special concerning the atuempted murder of old man Atkinson near G'arucsviile, by a crowd of negroes, and the cause then assigned was that they wished to get possession of his money. A prominent citizen of Carnes ville, in talking over the matter, made some startling revelations concerning it. It seems that two of the negroes were caught imme¬ diately and three have since been lodged in jail. These negroes are'said to have ad¬ mitted the attempt to murder the old man and revealed the fact that there were ten negroes in the gang; that their object was to kill nine of the leading citizens of the county-. Such news created great indigna¬ tion, aud it-is feared tha&dynch law will be called in to gei «d of the negroes. Last Sunday Mrs. McQuaig, wife Joseph McQuaig, of vVaycross, was scour¬ ing up a room at their residence, when, to get it out of the way, the shotgun was placed against the wall in the passage. A tittle 11-year-old boy picked - up the gun and told his sister Emma, 13 years old, that he would shoot her, playfully pointing the weapon at her, Ihe girl jumped behind the door and attempted to peep around at the boy who held the gun, the muzzle toward the ground- At this juncture Emma fell down on the floor (she is a. cripple and can hardly stand at best) and it is supposed this excited thabrother. Thesweapou was dis¬ charged and the sister's head received more than fifty bird shot. She was not badly hurt, however, and is sitting up. Thursday evening Constable <A. J. Delk of llmesville was -taking a negro named Brown to jail from Johnston, who was com¬ mitted tor theft. TFneu they came in sight Hinesville Brown attempted to escape, jerked away from- the constable, and pick¬ ing up a liglnwood knot, struck him a heavy blow on the head. Constable Delk drew his pistol and fired three shots at Brown, two of them taking effect in his right arm. Tho.officer brought his prisoner to jail. Therein living-in the southern portion Baldwin county a widow lady who is mother of seven daughters, hut- has no sons. She owns some land upon which she and ho r daughters manage to raise a small crop. Last year one of ths daughters went to- the woods with an axe and cut out and made a plow-stock, fasteued-on a plow, and with a little steer plowed the entire crop, making seven hales of cottou and crable amount-of vegetables. An old man living up in the mountains near Ellijay has had his .wife’s grave sur¬ rounded by several lightning rods. While the old lady .was living, lightning slrnck the old man so often that he dreaded to think of even his wife's body being struck, so he bought the rods. CULLODEN ill ill!
