The all-day singing at Bethel last
Sunday was a source of much pleasure
to all who attended. The leading fea
tures was the excellent singing and
appetizing dinner.

“UNCLE REMUS” DEAD
Joel Chandler Harris, familiarly
known as “Uncle Remus,” and an
author of note, died at his home in a
suburb of Atlanta Friday night. Mr.
Harris whose health had not been
good for some time had only been
confined to bis bed for about ten
days, suffering from chirrhosis of the
liver. Complications set in and
Thursday he grew rapidly worse, and
continued to sink until the end came
at 8 o’clock Friday’ night.
Joel Chandler Harris was born in
Eatonton, Ga., December 9, 1848.
He was married in 1873 to Miss Es
sie La Rose, of Canada, and in 1876
moved to Atlanta, joining the staff
of the Atlanta Constitution. It was
while he was while he was connected
with the Constitution that his tales
“Stories by Uncle Remus,” first at
tracted attention. In 1900 Mr Har
ris retired from active journalism
and until last year, when lie became
editor and proprietor of Uncle Rem
us’ Magazine, spent most of his time
at his suburban home. He is sur
vived by a widow, four sons and two
daughters.
Mr. Harris was buried in Atlanta
hi Westview cemetery Saturday.

The reunion of Shady Grove pupils
will be held July 10. Everybody is

two very able sermons.
