And cotton is still away up in the
’ •'middle’teens. Banzai!
If you don’t like the. teacher, go
tell him about it, and we think per
f haps he Can answer all you ever had
on your mind in a few minutes.
'Such are the kind who usually get
dissatisfied.
Yes, it is cotton picking, coon hunt
ing, Guinea-watermelon time, and we
would break out in poetry‘but hase
not got the heart.
If you want to patronize a good
school, Irwinton is the place. It looks
like a banner year for old Talmage
Institute. Prof. Moon comes highly
t recommended and promises to do
great things for the County if the
people will cooperate with him.
The little scrap they had over at
Grays cost Jones County two citizens
and the State SSOO for troops to re
store the peace. We regret that our
neighbors had to cut up so, but such
unfortunate things will happen in
the very best communities. Why
can’t people realize that if to fight
and kill is the only way to settle a
difference it is better far to leave the
matter unsettled forever.
After figuring for some days on
how it happened we have concluded .
that the cause of Governor Brown’s
defeat was Hoke Smith and the reg
istration law.
The people about here don't think
there is any virtue in Watson’s
charges against Hardwick.
The Journal'gives the following a?
one of the telegrams of congratula
tions received by Moke Smith, and
the writer of it ought th have a brass
bracelet (fastened from one arm to
the other):
‘•Amazing grace how sweet the sound
To hear those words - we beat Joe
Brown.’ ”
Mr, Walker wishes the people to
know that he will be in the race for
'Governor again next time. Lot of
i f the people perhaps don’t know he
'• ver had such ambitions.
X .
’ That man Howard must have seen
~ । ghost, judging from the way he ran
iway from the old Congressman Liv-
J igston.
We regret to note that Mr. Oscar
Methvin. formerly of this County,
Ivas defeated in Dodge County in the
luce he was making for Representa
tive in ihe Legislature.
The baseball season is drawing to
4 close and the theaters are opening.
l?he daily papers will change their
dope and no one in this section has a
kick coming if they do. It is about
a toss-up as to which is of the most
unconcern to a contryman who sees
an occasional game of “cat” or town
ball and is sometimes entertained by
a “Punch and Judy” show.
A Cincinnati heiress is complaining
of her allowance which is only $162
par day. Perhaps the poor little
thing won’t starve before siie gets
over her troubles.
Roosevelt has given some of the
alleged erpoked politicians of New
York warning th it ne is going to
give.them the fight of theirlives. It
will be unfortunate for them if he
neglects to day down those African
implimentsof warfare.
The.Smithsof Macon hare been
counted and they number (including
the little ones) about a thousand,
while the army of Jones comes second
with about seven hundred and fifty,
with (he- Browns a good th rd.

HIQH COST OF LIVING.
O*er $1,000,000 Extra Spent in Caring
for New York’s Poor.
The high cost of living is blamed
by the New York City department ot
charities for an Increase of more than
a million dollars, or nearly 50 per
cent, in the estimated cost of caring
for the city’s poor during the year of
1911. The estimate for the 1911 bud
get is $1,240,103 over the allowance j
for this year, and shows a total of j
estimated expense for 1911 of $3,-
922,715.17.
The department cares daily for
more than ten thousand sick or other
wise dependent persons, equivalent to
3,650.000 persons per year. The ex
pense, therefore, is about a dollar per
person.
FELL 800 FEET.
And Yet Daring Aviator Lives to Tell
the Tale.
J. C. Mars, the daring western avi
ator, who deals in thrills while you
wait, plunged 800 feet through space
and landed in Ambrose channel, at
the foot of New York bay, while mak
ing an aeroplane flight to Fort Wads
worth, Staten Island, from Sheeps
head Bay. The 50-horse power motor
on the flying machine went.wrong.
Mars was fished out rtf the water
unhurt by a tug boat, and his Curtiss
eight-cylinder flyer was picked up a j
wreck.
COTTON CROP PROSPECTS.
Fine Crops in Eastern States—Weevil
Menaces Some Sections.
The cotton crop situation is summa
rized thus by the Commercial-Appeal:
It is evident that the recent rainfall
in Texas has been of scattered and
local benefit, the precipitation being
too light in most cases to relieve the
drouth. In central and southern parts
of the state bolls are opening very
rapidly, and almost the entire crop,
unless rain falls soon, will very short
ly be ready for the pickers. The yield
promises somewhat better than last
year, however. The crop in northern
counties is good. Oklahoma’s pros
pect continues excellent, a record pro
duction being indicated.
In other states returns da not aver
age quite so favorable as during th<.
preceding four weeks. The rainfall
has been unevenly distributed, and
there are places where shedding is
complained of, the most serious re
ports coming from central and south
ern Alabama. The crop In Louisiana
and southern Mississippi will not be
increased beyond its present promise,
because of the activity of boll weevil.
In all eastern and valley states,
where rain has fallen during the
past two weeks, reports are good, and
there are some fine crops. The plant
generally has fruited well, but a late
frost is needed for maturing every
thing in sight. As a rule, cotton is
opening slowly, but the fruit is be
ginning to mature more rapidly than
heretofore.
BURGLARS’ HIGH OLD TIME.
For a Week Lived Sumptuously In
Deserted New York Home.
When Henry Morris, of Brooklyn,
N. Y., returns from his vacation he
will find that his home on Putnam
avenue has been looted by two bur
glars of the story book type.
From the appearance of the things
the burglars had been there about a
week. Every dish in the cupboard
had been used. There was ice in the
refrigerator, showing that the men
had taken proper care of the beers
and wines which they had brought in,
some of which still remained. An
empty cigar box and a large assort
ment of empty bottles told a story of
happy hours.
Every portable article of value in
the apartment had been taken, m
, eluding Mr. Morris’ wedding -ward
robe. Investigation by the police re
vealed the fact that several neigh
bors had seen two strange men leav
ing the building, one of whom was
attired in a frack coat, patent leather
shoes, silk hat, etc., while the other
carried a suit case that was apparent
s ly heavy.
