Ex-Official Arrested for Alleged Rob
bing of Chicago Sub-Treasury.
George W. Fitzgerald, a former tell
er in the Chicago subtreasury, was ar
' rested in that city by Deputy United
States marshals charged with the
mysterious theft of $173,000 from the
subtreasury on February, 19, 1907.
Fitgerald was arrested on a bench
warrant based on an indictment re
tuined secretly by a federal grand
jury on February 17, 1910. Three
days after the indictment was secret
ly returned and suppressed, on Feo
-1 ruary 20, it was announced that the
1 statute of limitations had operated to
; stop possible criminal prosecution In
i the peculiar case.
Coincident with the ruse by the au
thorities, secret servee men were de
tailed to watch Fitzgera'd constantly
and make a rigid investigation of the
former teller’s financial interests ana
affairs. Discoveries made by these
secret service operatives resulted hi
the order for Fitzgerald's arrest.
