county and those lving across the
river in Alabama have become thor
oughly aroused and have been apply
ing the torch rather freely to ne'gro‘
jodge buildings, school houses and|
churches. Friday night three negroi
Jodges, two churches and one school
house was laid in ashes by the mob,
which is bent on revenging the death
of Marshal Newberry.
New trouble arose ovet some neg
roes barricading themselves in a
house and firing upon a crowd of
whites who were in search of the neg
ro murderer West. This fire was re
turned by the whites and the building l
in which the negroes had barricaded
themselves was riddled with bullets!
and three of the negroes were killed. |

killed and a large number severely |
whipped and told to leave. It is saidi
every negro in that section is heavily |

The Flowers Lumber company have |
been forced to shut down their large |
gsaw mill on account of not having |
sufficient number of negroes on hand |
to do the work. All turpentine in-j
terest is at a standstill from the same ‘
cause.
Further trouble is apprehended andi

Governor Hoke Smith, of Georgia,
will resign his office between now and
October 15, if rumors circulated dur
ing the last few days and apparently
reliable are to be trusted,
While he has not made up his mingd
definitely on the exact date, report
says he is inclined to surrender his
present office about the first of Octo:
ber.
This wili give him six weeks fp look
after such matters as he thinks de:
mands his attention, and will enable
the new governor elected to succeed
him to take charge before the begin:
ning of the year. 3
If Governor Smith were to resign
October 1, the special election would
take place abput December 1.
"FATAL CRAP GAME.
Charjey Lumpkin, a Farmer, Aged 55,
Stabs Donald Simmons, Aged 22.
A Sunday barbecue with beer on the
side resulted in the killing of Donald
Simmons at Horseleg creek, two miles
| from Rome Sunday afternoon. Sim
| mecns wag engaged in a crap game
with Charley Lumpkin, a farmer 55
years old, when the two disagreed and
started a row. Lupkin claims to have
lbeen dazed by several blows from
Simmeng before he drew his knife and
’ cut his antagonist over the heart,
daath resulting almost immediately.
l Lumpkin was arrested. Simmons
