s THE ATHENAEUM 5 r7, whose rendition of ‘'The Deserted Plantation,” Dunbar, was far beyond the ordinary reader. The Chariot Race from ‘•Ben Hur’’ was read by Mr. N. P. Tillman, and Mr. F. Hall performed well on the piano. The college quartet was sbove par. The Anniversary Concert reached the high watermark in concerts at the college. We hope always to enjoy such well ren dered programs. All were inspired and elevated by the exercises and are hopeful of the future. N. P. Tillman, ’20 FOOT PRINTS OF HEROES ‘‘Carthage has crossed the Alps, Rome the sea.” France has crossed the continent and fought beneath the shadows of the pyramids. These three nations were represented by Hannibal Caesar, and Napoleon, whose names were synonymous with the country in which they lived. The names of these three heroes are landmarks in the zone of a progressive civilization The note worthy thing about each was that he obta ned common thought of his people and by his tact made them feel that the right man was on their side. What were the returns for their daring deeds? An unlamented sepulcher, that is true, but to-day they are known not as Hannibal, but Carthage; not as Caesar, but Rome; not as Napoleon, but France. We who look out of our college win dows and stretch our imagination upon the sunny side of the mountain upon which these men traveled have need to be up and doing. We who reflect on the daring deeds of the Cartha ginians at Cannae against the Romans; of the Romans at the Sambie River against the Nervii ; of the French at Austerlitz against the Russians and Austrians are extremely fortunate. We fortunate school boys who read the pages of history that have been immortalized by the lives of these men, should by reason of our obligation to humanity, be up and doing. There is no time for such trusted sons to hold malice for political opponents as a flint holds fire for dry leaves. We are charged by Him who stands in the dim future keeping watch over his own to be our brother’s keeper. We sing, ‘‘America, America, the land of the free and the home of the brave.” We sing our college songs
