commencement speaker

When Deborah Roberts
was getting ready for her
graduation from Perry
High School, she probably
had no idea that she'd be
flying home someday to
serve as the keynote
speaker for a college grad
uation - but she definitely
wasn’t limiting her aspira
tions even then.
Now well known nation
wide as an ABC news cor
respondent for “20-20",
Roberts, who graduated
from the University of
Georgia and served a stint
on the WMAZ-TV news
team before going on to
bigger things, has always
believed in “dreaming big
dreams," and she shared
that belief with the Fort
Valley State University
graduating class on May 8.

Reflecting on her brief
homecoming, Deborah
Roberts said, “It's always
good to come home, to get
reconnected with my roots
and see the folks."
She also reported that
her mother had prepared
fried chicken and collard
greens for her visit home.
“She’s always trying to
fatten me up." the petite
television star said with a
laugh.
Roberts, who had
brought her baby daugh
ter, Leila Ruth, along with
her. said that she and her
husband, NBC weather
man A 1 Roker, had plans
to spend the rest of the
weekend at Henderson
Village.
Perdue speaker for Middle Georgia graduation

annual Middle Georgia
College graduation here
May 8 marked the first

During the ceremony.
Ga. Sen. Sonny Perdue, R-
Bonaire, spoke to the
approximately 225 gradu
ates, parents, friends and
MGC faculty.
“It's my honor to be here
to see the fruition of educa
tion. The commencement is
an ending, but also a
beginning to the lives of
these young people,"
Perdue told the crowd in
Morris Gymnasium
“These students at
Middle Georgia College are
being prepared to go off to
Georgia, Georgia Tech and
the rest of Georgia's
schools. It thrills me to see
that the hard work that we
labor for is being harvested
here and it’s fun," said
Perdue.

Houston County, repre
sents Houston, Bleckley
and Pulaski counties and a
portion of southern Bibb
Judy Drummond promoted at Bank of Perry

The Bank of Perry has
promoted Judy Drummond
to Banking Officer. The
announcement was made
this week by President Kelly
Hillis. following
Drummond's election by
the bank’s board of direc
tors at their April meeting.
Drummond originally
came to the bank in August
1973 and has a wide range
of experience.
She began her career as
a teller and in the book
keeping department, and
has held positions as head
bookkeeper, administrative
assistant and image project
manager. More recently she
was promoted to manager
of the image department
and back room operations.

Perdue said addressing
the graduates was made
special to him because he
represents Bleckley County
in the State Senate.
“1 represent this county
and the college, so it’s
home to me and good to see
good things happen at
home. This was a great cer
emony, the kids are bright
and it makes you feel good
about the country." added
Perdue.
“This is truly a celebrato
ry event to watch students
succeed, their parents
proud of their accomplish
ments, and the entire fami
ly taking part in an impor
tant milestone," stated
Maradian.
“It’s tough to see so
many individuals move
from student to alumni in
one ceremony; however, it’s
rewarding to be a part of
their success and celebrate
with the faculty who have
done the work, the families
who have supported the
efforts, and listening to
Senator Sonny Perdue urge
the graduates to continue
their educations."
She also serves on the
bank’s internet banking
committee and has been
instrumental in bringing
this new service to cus
tomers.
“Judy is a very valuable
member of the Bank of
Perry’s team," said Hillis.
“She works to deliver the
quality of service that
makes the bank what it is,
and we are delighted to rec
ognize Judy with this pro
motion. She has many
years of dedicated and loyal
service to our bank.”
During her association
with the bank, Drummond
has attended numerous
banking schools, confer
ences and seminars.

Booster Club and as a
teacher for her church, the
First Baptist Church of
Perry.
She and her husband
Rusty, an engineer at
Robins Air Force Base, have
two daughters, Heather
Meyer, a sophomore at
Georgia Southwestern
College, and Stephany
Meyer, a freshman at the
University of Georgia, and a
son. Russell, who is a stu
dent at Kings Chapel
Elementary School The
Drummonds are residents
of Elko.
The Bank of Perry, orga
