Summer i$ time to catch hybrids at Lake Jackson
(EDITOR'S NOTE: This
is the second of two fea
tures on fishing at Lake
Jackson.)
Hybrids were unheard of
when* Lake Jackson was
impounded in 1910. Jack
son is the oldest reservoir in
Georgia. Centrally located
in Georgia near the city of
Jackson, Lake Jackson is a
4,750-acre impoundment
located in Jasper, Butts,
and Newton counties and is
owned and operated by the
Georgia Power Co.
Eight boat ramps provide
public access to the lake
and there is also a boat
ramp and fishing pier in the
tailrace just south of the
dam.
The shoreline is heavily
developed and the lake is
very popular with recre
ational boaters and skiers
during the summer
months.
Annual lake draw downs
from summer pool level
generally occur between
December and March and
only 2 or 3 of the public
ramps are usable when the
draw down approaches 8
feet or more.

tion on the location of the
boat ramps, bank fishing
opportunities, and lake

Lake Jackson has bene
fited by nearly annual
stockings of hybrids by the
Wildlife Resources Division
which is part of the Georgia
Department of Natural
Resources.
According to biologist
reports, hybrid bass catch
es will average 2-3 pounds
in most years and some
individuals weighing up to
7-8 pounds are available.
Though not noted for large
hybrids, Jackson produced
a lake record catch weigh
ing 15 lbs. 2 ounces in
1992.
The WRD recommends
casting bucktails or jigging
spoons around the dam or
looking for schools feeding
on top in the spring and
summer.
Nothing works like the
real thing and if fishermen
can collect live shad from
the lake, they make excel
lent bait for hybrids. Shad
can best be caught in a cast
net, but first you’ve got to
locate them in the backs of
coves in the early morning
hours.
Once caught they should
be kept in a round, aerated
bait tank. Live small bream
also make good hybrid
baits, but they can only be
acquired by means of a
hook and line.
Both shad and bream
should be used on a South
Carolina type rig. with the

below a one-ounce lead.
Once hybrids are located on
your depth finder, drop
down the bait to the level
the fish are holding and
keep a firm and still grip on
the rod or it might get
yanked over board.
Trolling allows an angler
to fish multiple lines, there
by setting up a buffet of
baits which tempt wary
hybrids.
Slender crank baits are
great trolling lures for big
hybrids in clear water, due
to their realistic bait fish
profile. Try the deep diving

days.
Storm’s Little Mac in
white/red back also work
great. These lures run 15 to
19 feet deep on 14-pound
line. Shallow minnow imita
tors like Rapalas work well
on down riggers. You might
catch a walleye on these
baits, too.
Fat crank baits work best
in slightly stained water
where more lure visibility is
needed, and any time you
need a deep presentation.
Storm's Magnum Wiggle
Wart will run to 26 feet.
Bagley’s DB3 runs around
22 feet.
These lures will also
catch suspended bass.
Bucktails and Twisters
are large white, yellow or
chartreuse hair jigs or twist
tail grubs which are deadly
when slow trolled through a
school of hybrids.
One especially effective
way to rig these lures is to
tie them on a leader line
attached to the rear hook of
a diving crank bait.
Begin by using lures
which run at varying
depths. Troll the deepest

side up to 250 feet behind
the boat. Run the shallower
lures inside, not more than
150 feet back. Vary both the
size and the depth of your
offerings.
Rather than run all lines
with the same lure, it is
often better to experiment
with the hybrids in Lake
Jackson.
Some days the fish seem
to only hit deep diving
baits, but on other days the
fish may be shallower and
may prefer a smaller lure. It
is often better to present a
variety of lures and see
what the fish like best.
One word of caution
make sure your lures are
running straight or one will
cross the others and leave
you with a tangled mess.
Summer time is the right
time to troll Lake Jackson.
The action starts once the
water warms up. The
hybrids move out of the
tributaries and start
schooling on the main lake.
Look for hybrids to sus
pend near the dam and
near the mouths of major
creeks and rivers, often 15
to 25 feet deep in early
spring.
By June, focus all your
attention on the main lake
areas mentioned earlier by
Neil Ernhart. Once the tem
perature hits 80 degrees,
the hybrids on Jackson
become very “big water" ori
ented. They’ll often migrate
between main lake points,
but don’t align themselves
to channels and submerged
structure to the extent that
bass and crappie do.
Knowledgeable hybrid
anglers often say that
hybrids “graze like cows" on
flat featureless bottoms as
they suspend and feed
when opportunity knocks,
on moving schools of shad.
As summer progresses
and the waters heat up,
