Henderson wildfire claims six acres

Firefighters battled a
wildfire in southern Hous
ton County for several
hours June 13 after a blaze
of unknown origin started a
fire which swept across six
acres just south of Hender
son along U.S. 41.
According to Houston
County Fire Chief Jimmy
Williams, the fire spread
rapidly because of “dusty and
dry conditions" and winds.
Reporting to the scene
were firefighters from the
county Hayneville, Mead
owdale and Lakes stations,
along with the fire depart
ment at the Dooly County
Correctional Institute. Two
doublewide homes near the
fire were successfully pro
tected, WilUaips said, and
there were no injuries.
Hodac seeking teddy bears
for children in crisis
HODACs Victim
Resource Center is sponsor
ing a Teddy Bear Drive with
the theme “Donate a Teddy
Bear for a Child in Crisis."
The stuffed animals are
presented to children or to
families with children who
are victims of crime.
HODAC is also seeking

victims of crime who are in
crisis: teddy bears, travel
size toiletries such as
toothpaste, deodorant,
soaps, shampoos, brushes
and combs; children’s new
jogging suits in small,
medium and large sizes;
women’s new jogging suits,
large and extra-large; chil
dren’s and adult’s socks
and underwear. In many
cases, these items are pro
vided to crime victims in
the emergency room.

Two arrested
A man and a woman
from Macon were arrested
here on June 14 and
charged with theft by tak
ing and giving false names.
According to Det. Heath
Dykes of the Peny Police
Department. Anthony Brown,
35, and Stephanie Raines,
37, were arrested by Officer
Keith Kendall soon after
Kendall received a report on
their suspicious behavior
from the Conoco station on
Sam Nunn Boulevard.
According to Dykes,
Brown and Raines report
edly had been in several
area convenience stores,
and while one of them cre
ated a distraction for the
clerk, the other picked up
beer and cigarettes, which
were then presented to the
clerk as already-purchased
iems for exchange.

opponents in Perry Junior
League Major League play
last week.
Baxter dumped Kiwanis
7-0 while Tolleson
drummed MMM, CPA, 13-
1.
In the first game,
Mitchell Fowler was the
winning pitcher. He had a
two-hit shutout with seven
strikeouts. Christopher
Tortoris and robbie Grlsen
thwaite led Baxter with sin
gles and runs batted in.
Josh Davidson picked up
the win for Tolleson. He
went four innings, gave up
four hits and no earned
runs. He recorded four
strikeouts.
Grant Brantley led Tolle
son at the plate with two
singles, three RBI and two
runs scored. Dusty Denton
had a double, a single, two
RBI and a run scored.
Michael Delbert had a sin
gle, an RBI and scored
twice.
Timmy McCoy led MMM
with a double and an RBI.
Meanwhile. Alltel, inac
tive last week, clung to first
place in the second half
with a 5-1 record. Alltel
had a chance to clinch first
place in a game against
