weeks before they’ll have the

Joe and Connette Gayle
have returned from
Louisville, Kentucky and a
marvelous, wonderful time
with the whole Gayle clan
and Connette’s two sisters.
Lexington is home but they
were all in Louisville for the
National Fishing Lure Col
lectors Club where Currey
and Pop Joe Sr. had a dis
play of Gayle fishing reels
handmade by Joe's grandfa
ther on a houseboat, on the
Kentucky River when he
lived right there in Frank
furt. He was among the old
Kentucky watch makers who
went into making fishing
reels with Meek & Milan and
Schneider. He made the first
“Clarence Gayle” reel in
1884 followed by others and
one for his bride in 1890. His
handmade reels sold for
about SIOO even then but he
also fashioned a 50 cent
stamped out reel with no
gears. Later on some turned
up with “Made in Japan"
stamped on .
During World War II with
his capability for making
fishing reels he was asked to
make one part of the atomic
bomb. The machinist didn’t
even know what it was for at
the time; but when he found
out, he felt he had finally
gotten even!
