Clark and Nancy Joiner
attended the biannual
Region IV Convention of the
American Guild of Organists
June 27-30 in Knoxville,
Tenn.
AGO is a professional
association serving the organ
and choral music fields.
Founded in 1896, AGO
serves over 21,000 members
throughout the world.
Nancy Joiner is organ
ist/choirmaster of St.
Christopher's Episcopal
Church and a member of the
Macon AGO chapter.
The convention consisted
of daily worship sendees,
recitals, concerts and work
shops on organ playing,
choral conducting, resources
and materials for the church
musician. Also offered were
forums on topics such as
professional concerns and
the directions in church
music.
Several Knoxville area
churches opened their doors
and their instruments to the
convention.
Performances were heard
on 10 different pipe organs
including the 14-rank Wurl
itzer organ built in 1928 and
housed in the historic Ten
nessee Theater in downtown
Knoxville.
Nancy Joiner said there
are only about 150 of these
theater organs left in the
United States. Efforts are
being made by individuals
and groups to preserve those
that remain.)
Worship services featured
music by local church musi
cians as well as members of
the Knoxville Symphony.
Recitals featured the artistry
of well-known organists
brought in from different
parts of the country. Todd
Wilson from the Cleveland
Institute of Music was the
featured organist for the con
vention.
A highlight of the conven
tion was the a capella con
cert given by the Choir of
Christ Episcopal Church
from Char'otte, N.C. under
the direction of Benjamin
Hutto. Their repertoire spans
five centuries and includes
works by European and
American composers as well
as the best of the Anglican
heritage. Also featured was
an AGO commissioned com
position for organ and flute
by Dan Locklair, composer
in-residence at Wake Forest
University.
Theologian for the week
was Brant S. Copeland, pas
tor of First Presbyterian
Church, Tallahassee, Fla.
A special treat for Nancy
Joiner was hearing world
renowned organist William
Porter (New England Conser
vatory of Music. Boston) play
a recital on a Richards,
Fowkes and Co. organ. This
organ was built at the
Richards, Fowkes & Co.
shop near Chattanooga and
installed in ihe Westminster
Presbyterian Church in Sep
tember, 1998. In January
1997 Joiner visited this shop
with a Mercer University
group led by Dr. Robert Par
ris. That organ (2 manual,
33 rank) was in the shop
being built at the time. The
builder Bruce Fowkes and
his wife Karla attended the
recital and were recognized
by Dr. Porter.
