LEARNING TIME Perry area young

The City of Perry Recreation Department
is sponsoring the Challenger British Soccer
Camps through Aug. 6. Ryan Hodgson
from York, England is coaching two camps,
8 a.m.- 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Hodgson has played soccer since he was
born 20 years ago. “My father claims he set
me in front of the television with a soccer
ball the day I came home from the hospi
tal," he said.
Hodgson is staying with Mike and Beck
ie King in Perry during the camps.
“1 am trying to teach the 17 basic rules of
soccer. I hope to sharpen their fundamental
skills,’’ said Hodgson. He admits he has air each,'
Teams gearing up for baseball stretch pennant runs
The major league baseball
trading deadline has come and
gone. Some contending teams
appeared to strengthen them
selves more than others, while
some felt just a little reinforce
ment was all they needed.
The New York Mets, in a neck
and-neck battle with Atlanta for
lead in the National League east,
made the biggest moves,
although they already appeared
to be solid.
It seems, though, that center
fielder Brian Mcßae had lost all
interest in playing for Bobby
Valentine, the Mets’ manager.
So the Mets traded for Colorado
centerfielder Daryl Hamilton,
bad wheels and all.
To bolster their pitching staff.
New York got Chuck McElroy in
the Colorado deal, and acquired
closer Billy Taylor from Oak
land. although he will probably
be a set-up man for Armando
Benitez in New York.
But those aren’t the only
players New York got. Infielder
Shawon Dunston comes over
from St. Louis, and could be the

learned something from one young player.
“I was trying to say the one important
skill a soccer play must have is control. A
young child told me the one important skill
a soccer player must have is fun. And that
is very true. Without fun, people wouldn’t
play." said Hodgson.
The morning soccer camp is for young

campers. They are John David Howard,

steadying force the Mets need
around the clubhouse. Dun
ston, who can play shortstop or
the outfield, is also a solid hit
ter.
To counter the Mets' moves,
the Braves made just one deal.
Atlanta acquired left handed
pitcher Terry Mulholland and
shortstop Jose Hernandez from
the Chicago Cubs for top pitch
ing prospect Micah Bowie and
two minor leaguers.
Bowie had been on the
Atlanta roster because of the
season-ending injury to Odalis
Perez. Mulholland will add vet
eran leadership to a staff which
has been trying to get along with
each selected hunter.
The traditional Black
beard Island (Mclntosh
County, Georgia) archery
hunts for deer will be held
for the 53rd consecutive
year. The first hunt will run
from Oct. 28-30. The sec
ond hunt will begin on Dec.
2 and conclude on Dec. 4.
The Harris Neck NWR
(Mclntosh County, Ga.)
deer hunts will be contin
ued for the 20th season.
This year, a non-quota bow
hunt is scheduled from
Sept.r 23-25, and a quota
gun hunt (100 permits) is
scheduled for Nov. 12.
Bow and gun hunters
may take three deer, either

youngsters Kevin Millwood,
Perez and Bruce Chen. Keep in
mind, too, that John Smoltz is
not guaranteed to make it
through the season.
Already Atlanta had to deal
for a catcher, sending another
minor league pitching prospect
to San Diego for left hand hit
ting catcher Greg Myers. The
move was necessitated by the
season-ending knee injury suf
fered by Javy Lopez. He bat will
surely be missed, and it’s ques
tionable whether Eddie Perez is
an every-day catcher.
With the injuries the Braves
have suffered over the past sev
eral weeks, it is no wonder the
Mets have caught up in the
standings. In fact, for one day.
New York was in first place by
half a game.
Brian Jordan has been out of
the lineup with a combination of
nagging injuries, none serious
enough to place him on the dis
abled list. But he is obviously
playing in' pain. That’s the type
of leadership Atlanta must have
now. A few players have to play

hunt (shotguns, with slugs

The Wassaw (Chatham

archery hunt is set for three
consecutive days: Oct. 7-9

gun hunt, a quota hunt

Football practice opens for prep squads
With temperatures soaring near the 100
mark every day, its hard to believe it is time
for high school and middle school football
already.
The calendar and the schedule say dif
ferently. Practice opened at Westfield Aug.
2 in anticipation of the first game of the
season at Pinehurst Aug. 28.
The Hornets, faced with reloading this
season after many starters graduated, open
the season against local rival Fullington at
8 p.m. that evening.
Across town, the Perry High Panthers
also opened practice July 31. The Panthers
open their season Sept. 3 at home with a
game against Vidalia.

Brannen 37points from series lead in Charlotte
Local teen racing sensa
tion Walt Brannen made a
return trip to Charlotte,
N.C. last week for race 7 of
the Summer Shootout
Series.
During afternoon heat
races, Brannen started
third and was trying to
advance to the lead when
he bumped the leader and
was sent to the back of the
pack.
Following the restart,
Brannen advanced to finish
seventh in the heat. This
forced him into a consola
with nagging injuries. Chipper
Jones does. Jordan does. Walt
Weiss will not. Should he go
down again with his lingering
groin injuries, Hernandez will
step in and fill the void.
Ozzie Guillen is also a very
good player, though perhaps not
on an everyday basis. He is solid
in relief, though. Hernandez can
play every day. He’s hit 14 home
runs for the Cubs while driving
in more than 40 runs. Hernan
dez can also play the outfield, as
well as the other infield posi
tions. His acquisition makes
sense to me.
With Hernandez’s acquisition,
somebody has to be the odd
man out. At this writing, the
decision hasn’t been made, but
you have to feel it will.be Otis

Braves had hoped he would.

too. Over the past 18 games.
Klesko is hitting .361 with seven
home runs and 16 runs batted
in. Centerfielder Andruw Jones
is showing the patience at the
plate that it will take for his
offense to catch up with his
phenomenal defense. Jones,
with Lopez out of the lineup, has
turned up his offense a notch or
two. He now has 22 home runs
and 64 runs batted in.
And how about Chipper Jones!
One of the hottest hitters in the
league since the all-star game,
even before that, Jones had 1 1
home runs in July, and started
August the same w’ay. with a* pair
of home runs Sunday.
What Atlanta will need now is
a little patience, until all of the
new pieces fit into the puzzle.
But they haven’t won seven
straight division titles by pan
icking in August. Don’t look for
it to happen now.
The John Schuerholz 11th

baseball world, but it could be
just enough to put the team over
the hump.
