Months before basketball
season starts. Perry Middle
School's new addition to the
coaching staff, Pamela Ware,
already knows something
about pressure.
"It is a lot of pressure,
coming into a school with
the reputation for excellence
that Perry Middle has, espe
cially the year after a girls
basketball championship. It
is a tough position but it
also has advantages too. It
makes you very determined
to do vour best and suc
ceed." said Coach Ware in
an interview her first day on
the job Monday morning.
Coach Ware, a graduate of
Westover High School in
Albany and Albany State,
enters Perry Middle as a first
year teacher. She said that
one of the things that inter
ested her in the teaching
and coaching position at
Perry was the attitude of the
others teachers and staff at
the school.
“They are definitely proud
of what they are achieving
here. They are proud of this
school and their students."
Although her first season
coaching will not begin until
November, already she has
defined wh"i she will be
looking for in her team.
To me, attitude of the
players is very important. It
reflects not only the individ
ual but you as a coach. In
turn, it reflects the potential
success of a team."
Ware considers her teach
ing position a very impor
tant part of her coaching
job.

New At Perry Middle
During the PE and
Health class she will be
teaching, she plans to start
looking at students, and
encouraging their skills
during PE class. Also, she
is excited about the input
she will get from students
while working with them
during PE time.
“Feedback is a very
important part of coaching.
Not only from the kids on
the team, but other stu
dents as well. Working with
kids during the day, 1 will
be able to hear from them
and the other students. It
will give me a chance to
know them and their abili
ties earlier."
Athletic Director Danny
Shelton was excited about
Ware coming to the school
and spoke highly of her.
“We are expecting good
things from her. She is
energetic and ready to go."

tant girls basketball coach
at Peach County High
School.
In an interview after her
final team was selected,
Horsting seemed excited
about her new job at Perry
High School.
“I like to keep up with my
athletes during the day. 1
want to know their grades,
their behavior at school,
what’s going on in their
lives. Coaching for me is
full time interaction with
my players."
Everyone who tried out,
35 young ladies, made the
softball team. Sixteen are
expected to play varsity
while the rest will make up
the Junior Varsity squad.
Horsting said she has
strong feelings about her
decision not to cut anyone.
“It is simple," she said. “I
don’t believe in cuts"
Cut a freshman or some
one who doesn’t have the
greatest ability and you
quash their desire,
Horsting said.
“Who knows how they
might play in a couple of
years, after working hard
and playing with a team. As
long as they have the desire
and want to work, I want
them on my team," she
said.
The Panthers return
three seniors this season,
all of whom are looking
very good according to their
coach. Leading the way is
returning starter, Sarah
Stuckey.
“Sarah is strong all
around. She has really
been looking good through

She is playing great at third

a strong infield corner,"
Horsting said.
Kristen Herald is a hard
worker according to Host
ing. “No matter where I put
her, whether infield or out
field Kristen gives me
everything she’s got,"
Horsting said.
Herald has been spend
ing some practice on the
mound and may be able to
get in some pitching time
during the regular season.
Starting catcher from
last season, Miranda Gar
ren, is the third senior.
“She is looking good at
catcher and has been
working hard on her tim
ing. Her batting is coming
around strong. Miranda
has got lots of talent,"
Horsting said.
Although the team has
had several coaching
changes in the past years,
Horsting said that was not
something that had been
on her players mind a lot.
’They are adjusting well
to me and my methods.“
she said. “That says a lot
about the caliber of girls I
have playing for me. Their
attitude is great. Attitude is
everything to me."
Horsting did not spend
much time learning about
the returning players
before the first practice.
“That’s why I have had
tryouts for every position. It
doesn’t matter what they
did last year. They have to
prove to me they have what
it takes," Horsting said.
Horsting said the Pan
ther team seems to have
come together as a unit.
