It’s open season!
Lady Hornet
softball squad
travels to Bellville
By Phil Clark
’’TOEB'EV 11555
softball coach Leigh Ann
Johnson will use the Aug.
21 pre-season softball
tournament at Pinewood
Christian Academy to look
at several different combi
nations as nearly a dozen
players try to nail down a
starting assignment.
"We hgve more competi
tion for playing time this
year than we had a year
ago.” said Johnson, “We
picked up an excellent
player in Patty Dudley, a
senior who transferred
from Stratford. The year's
experience gained by most
of our starters will make us
even stronger," Johnson
continued.
The tournament at
Pinewood will be a round
robin type in that no team
will be eliminated.
"There won't be a winner
declared, and we play
Pinewood twice, but other
wise it works like a round
robin. No team will be elim
mated," Johnson explained.
The Lady Hornets' first
game will be at 9:45 a.m.
Westfield fans, most of
whom are familiar with the
trip, are reminded to take I
-16 to the Metter exit at Ga.
129. Go right and follow
129 until it intersects with
Ga. 169. Take another
right turn and follow 169
into Bellville.
Pee Wee Reese earned respect
of everyone for his *attitude
Respect is not some
thing that comes with the
territory. It just seems
that way, what with
today’s whining,
super flops. They wan
“respect” just because
they have been in the
right place at the right
time, in a generous
sports world.
Baseball lost one of it's
most respected ambas
sadors last Saturday
when Harold “Pee Wee"
Reese passed away at the
age of 81. How much
respect did he earn?
Enough that today’s
Dodgers, even in their so
called super star status,
will honor Reese by wear
ing a patch on their uni
forms in lys memory.
To boot, flags at
Dodger Stadium were
flown at half staff during
the Braves’ recent week
end trip to Los Angeles.
Not only are today’s
•Dodgers honoring the
one-time team captain
and inspirational leader.
Duke Snider, who played
with Reese in the Brook
lyn days, called Pee Wee
"the greatest Dodger who
ever lived."
It was Reese who
befriended a shy, some
times frightened Jackie
Robinson in 1947 as
Robinson became the
first black to play in the
major leagues. In fact,
Reese's plaque at the Hall
of Fame even alludes to
the fact.
Reese, the plaque
reads “was instrumental
in easing acceptance of
Jackie Robinson as base
ball's first black per
former."
Reese didn’t seek
acclaim or recognition for
what he did concerning
Robinson. "Jackie was a
friend, and I just treated
him as I would want to be
treated." Reese said.
That attitude was typi
cal of Reese’s outlook
over his 16-year major
league career. He collect
ed more than 2,000 hits.

with a career batting
average of .269. And like
so many others, Reese
gave up some of his most
productive years to serve
his country during World
War 11. missing the 1943.
44 and ’45 seasons while
serving in the U.S. Navy.
A great team leader, a
clubhouse leader and
community leader. Reese
was captain of Dodger
teams that won seven
National League pen
nants, and their only
World Series title while in
Brooklyn.
He played a position
that normally was not
counted on for offense in
those glory days of base
ball, yet he led the league
in runs scored in 1949
with 132, and in stolen
bases in 1952 with 30!
And though it was not
a glamorous offensive
position, some of the
most famous players of
the 40s and 50s were
shortstops.
Think of Reese, Phil
Rizzuto of the Yankees,
Marty Marion of the Car
dinals, Johnny Logan of
the Braves, Lou
Boudreau of the Indians,
Granny Hamner of the
Phillies. Dick Groat of the
Pirates, Ernie Banks of
the Cubs, Chico Car
rasquel of the White Sox,
Junior Stephens of the
Red Sox, and others.
Reese was among the
best of the lot.
Still, it was the intangi
bles that Reese brought
to the table which made
him one of the most valu
able Dodgers of all time.

faces Warner Robins,
Peach County Aug. 20

TET Perrv Panthers will
start football season off by
going up against two Mid
dle Georgia powerhouses
Auig. 20 as they participate
in a good old-fashioned
foofball jamboree.
Warner Robins and
Peach County will also be
playing in the event which
will be held at Anderson
Field at Peach County High
School.
Starting time for the
evening of football is 7 p.m.
Tickets are $5 and are
available at the gate. Perry
will get one-third of the
gate profits.
The jamboree comes two
weeks before Perry’s first
game of the 1999 season
against Vidalia.
Perry Head Coach and
Athletic Director George
Collins said the jamboree
would be a good way to
break up fall practice.
"It gives us the chance to
compete against some
teams we usually don't see
and do something differ
ent," Collins said.
The Panthers will open
against Warner Robins,
playing two quarters for a
total of 18 minutes. Using
the same format, Warner
Robins will follow against
Peach County; Perry will
conclude the evening
against Peach County.
together amidst turmoil,
such as the promotion of
Robinson in 1947. His
befriending of Robinson
might not have been a
popular move by Reese in
the beginning, but it did
n’t take long for other
Dodgers, and yes, other
teams, to realize that
Reese was sincere, that
Robinson belonged, and
that Reese would defend
Robinson’s rights.
Although he was sub
jected to some serious
“riding" for befriending
Robinson. Reese
answered the agitators in
the best possible way. He
ignored them!
And he gained a life
time friend in Robinson.
He gained even more
respect from his Dodger
teammates as the years
progressed. Ralph Bran
ca, a pitcher, said of
Reese, “He personified
the spirit of Brooklyn and
the Dodgers."
Many fans probably
remember Reese more as
a broadcaster than as a
player. It was Reese who
teamed with the immor
tal. yet sometimes
unbearable Dizzy Dean in
the “game-of-the week"
television booth.
Reese was the perfect
fit for the bragging Dean,
for Reese the broadcaster
was the same as Reese
the player. He did not
seek, nor would he
accept, the limelight.
That suited Dizzy
Dean’s ego perfectly.
They were perhaps the
most compatible team of
broadcasters of that era.
Could be the most com
patible ever. And it was
because of Pee Wee
Reese.
Pee Wee Reese was 81.
He took his job seriously.
He took his team serious
ly. And he took a South
erner’s friendship with a
black man seriously. So
long, Pee Wee! To para
phrase Dizzy Dean, “he
slud home safely."
