MdS Drops Hornets twice
By Phil Clark
HOMK JOMUVU. SFOKTB
It was a doubleheader the
Westfield Lady Hornets would
rather forget.
Unfortunately, it was a
Georgia Independent Schools
Association Region lAAA
affair at Mount de Sales Sept
7.
The Lady Hornets dropped
to 5-5 overall and 1 -3 in lAAA
as the Cavaliers captured
both ends of the twin bill. 18-
6 and 11-1.
Nine Westfield errors in
game one set the stage for a
frustrating afternoon for
coach Leigh Ann Johnson's
team. The Lady Hornets col
lected just eight hits in game
one, even though they did
own a brief 2-0 lead after one
inning of play.
Rachel Moore and Julee
Todd opened the game with
back to back singles, and
after Stephanie Burdeshaw
hit into a force play. Hanna
Barrett drove in two runs with
a single to left-center. But
that was all the Lady Hornets
could find to cheer about as
the Cavaliers went on to take
game one 18-6. getting three
hits each from Kristi Taylor
and Jennifer Leverett.
Hornets take softball pair from Windsor
By Phil Clark
Home Journal Sports
The Westfield Lady Hornets
picked up an important victory'
over Windsor Sept 9 in tne tirst
game of a twin bill. It came just
two days after a disappointing
doubleheader loss to Mount de
Sales in which Westfield
admittedly did not play well.
The region lAAA games
against Windsor, then, became
even more important to region
standings.
Windsor managed just fife
hits over the six innings the
teams were able to play before
the rains came. Three of those
hits came in the fifth inning
when the Lady Knights posted
their most serious scoring
threat. The Westfield defense
answered, though, and put
down the threat before the
Lady Knights could score.
The Lady Hornets picked up
one run in the second and
three more in the third for the
4-0 victory. With one out in the
second, Stephanie Thompson,
Patty Dudley and Amber Hun
nicutt singled to load the bases
and Emily Bennett's grounder
scored Thompson from third
base.
Rachel Moore led off the
third with the second of her
three hits in the game, and
Julee Todd followed with a sin
gle. Burdeshaw reached on a
fielder s choice as Todd was
forced at second and Moore
scored when Basrrett drilled a
single to left field.
Anne Peake reached on a
fielder’s choice as Barrett was
retired at second, and Thomp
son was safe when her
grounder was bobbled at sec
ond base. Burdeshaw scoring.
The final run of the inning
came when Dudley singled in
Peake. Todd was the winning

Barrett was 2-2 with four
runs batted in for Westfield,
including a long home run
with Todd on base with a walk
in the third inning. Anne
Peake also had two hits for
Westfield with a run scored.
Unlike the first game, the
Lady Hornets never had a
lead in game two. The Cava
liers picked up four in their
half of the second inning and
coasted to an 11-1 victory.
Westlield”s only run came
in the fourth inning when
Burdeshaw”s double scored
Moore. Barrett was 2-2 with
an intentional walk, while
Patty Dudley had two singles
for Westfield. Four Cavaliers
collected two hits each. Carrie
DeLoach had two doubles.

Heavy rain in the top of the
sixth inning forced officials to
declare tne game complete,
and the second game of the
scheduled doubleheader was
rescheduled for Sept 13.
Four days after the twin bill
began, the two teams met to
finish it. The Lady Knights
started as if they meant to gain
a split, and pick up their first
region win. Fitting a 3-spot on
the board, Windsor took a brief
lead in the top of the first.
Westfield came right back in
the bottom on the inning to go
ahead for good. Rachel Moore
led off with a single, and Julee
Todd's bouncer was mishan
dled at shortstop. Anne Peake
singled to load the bases, and
Hanna Barrett’s grounder
scored the first run of the
inning.
Burdeshaw hit into a field
er’s choice, but another run
scored to close the gap to a sin
gle run. After Stephanie
Thompson drew a walk to re
load the bases, Patty Dudley
drove home the tying run with
a single to left-center.
Amber Hunnicutt’s
grounder got the go-ahead run
across, and Emily Bennett’s
single drove home the fifth run
of the inning, and the Lady
Hornets were ahead to stay.
Scoring in every inning except
their final at-bat, Westfield
went on to sweep the double
header with a 16-6 win.

Hunting seasons gearing up quickly
It’s becoming increas
ingly tough to find a place
to dove hunt in Houston
County. Part of this is
because of the weather
this year and part because
we are becoming more
populated.
The summer drought
burned up much of the
crops, especially corn, so
there’s not as many good
crop fields to hunt over
this year.
Another problem is we
just don’t have as many
active farmers in Houston
County as in the past.
Some people have just
quit farming, changed
occupations or sold off
their land for housing
subdivisions.
Still, if you look enough,
you can find a few places
to hunt. Pay shoots are
much more common but I
don’t care to pay S3O-50
for the opportunity to dove
hunt.

they can become crowded.
The crowds do thin out
after early season activity.

Meanwhile, keep these
things in mind to have a
safe, enjoyable hunt:
V Hunters should use
common sense, watch
where they shoot, and
always be aware of the
location of other hunters.
V Resident and non-res
ident hunters must pos
sess a Georgia hunting
license and a HIP permit
to hunt doves. Hunters
must also possess a WMA
license to hunt on a WMA
dove field.
V The daily limit is 12
doves per day. Bag limits
are set to avoid over-har

only surplus animals.
Taking too man> doves
could result in fewer doves
next season.
V It is illegal to bait
