Middle School softball teams win in first round of county tournament
PY ALUNE KENT
Home Journal Sports
With both of the Perry
middle school team top
seeded in this week’s soft
ball tournament, the Pan
thers enjoyed home field
advantage for the first
round Tuesday evening.
The 7th grade has the
second best record in the
county with a 5-1 record.
Undefeated Feagin Mill
received a bye for the first
round. In Bth grade com
. etition, Peny placed 3rd
out of the seven schools
with a 4-2 record.
Tuesday night, the 7th
grade Panthers took an
early 2-0 lead in the first
Perry
moved the ball ail the way
to the 45 yard line. The
drive was stopped short
however, as the Perry
defense stopped Jackson
three times behind the line
of scrimmage. Mario Hart,
Marnez Taylor, Matthew
Dennis and Morris Claring
ton all picked up a sack
during the possession and
forced Jackson to punt the
ball away.
Again in the second, after
t he only Panther thrown inter
ception of the evening. Jack
son worked their wav down
inside the thirty. Dustin
Rainey put on pursuit pres
sure on the Red Devil quarter
back who was forced to throw
the ball away. On fourth
down and Jackson attempting
to pick up the first on fourth
down, Clarington again put
pressure on die quarterback
and the pass was incomplete.
Perry's defense would add
points of their own to the
b< iard during the evening, Late
in the third, with Perry trail-

Hornets were awesome on
offense, scoring a 41-0
shutout for the second
consecutive game
(although the FPD score
board showed a 40-0 score
as the final). While FPD
was trying to cross up the
Hornets by staying on the
ground early in the game,
the Hornets struck
through the air as Bo Hart
enjoyed his best passing
game. Hart threw the ball
just seven times, but con
nected on five of them,
with four of the comple
tions going for 24 yards or
more. Hart hit Danier Weir
for a touchdown for the
second straight game, as
the big junior tight end
fought his way into the
endzone with Vikings
hanging on tiying bring
him down. Weir caught
four of Hart's passes for 88
yards and a touchdown.
He has now grabbed ten
passes for 188 yards and
two touchdowns, moving
ahead of Ernest Greene as
the team's receiving
yardage leader. Greene
caught one pass for 24
yards and now has 157
yards for the season, and
three touchdowns.
Another Hornet who
enjoyed his best game of
the season was Chance
Jones, the sophomore full
back. Jones carried the
ball seven times for 114
yards and scored two
touchdowns, one of them
on a dazzling 70-yard run
from scrimmage. It’s the
first 2-TD game for Jones.
Jacob Walker rushed
twelve times for 101 yards
and scored his 15th
touchdown of the year as
he draws closer to the
school record of 20. which
Walker shares with Chris
Small.
After the Vikings
picked up two first downs
on their initial possession,
the Hornets stopped them
on a third and five as Kyle
Harold broke up a pass.
Westfield didn’t move the
chains on their first pos
session, but after forcing
another Viking punt, the
offense got untracked on
the Hornets’ second pos
session as Walker picked
up 22 yards on a third
down play, then teamed
with Jones to pick up two
more first downs to the
Vikings’ 24. Hart then hit
Weir for the first touch
against Rumble when
Danielle Corcoran hit a
stand up double to left field
that brought in runner
Heather Morrill. Corcoran
scored when she stole
home.
In the second, Corcoran
again scored a runner with
a driving ball down the 3rd
base line.
Amanda Ramirez had a
hit to center field that
brought in two Perry run
ners and then she stole
home putting the Panthers
up 6-0.
During the second. Taryn
Williams had a standup
triple when she hit the ball
over the head of the center

With huge holes opened up
by the Panther offensive line,
Tray Green broke loose on a
long run and moved the ball
all the way to the 18 yard line.
Rashad Winn again brought
the ball down to the one and
went up the middle for the
touchdown.
Although Perry had a 32-18
lead by the fourth, Jackson’s
offense came back and scored
twice to tie up the game. The
game was forced into over
time. a sight now familiar to
Perry fans.
It was the Panthers' third
overtime game in their last
ten.

penalties and only having
one turnover was a big

Collins. “We got on the

down of the game and
Nathan Skinner tacked on
the point after for a 7-0
Westfield lead. The Hornets
went on to score on their
next two possessions as
Jones scored from 23 yards
in a drive that included
another Hart-to-Weir 24-
yard completion.
Meanwhile the Vikings
were punting on every pos
session and the Hornets
answered their fourth punt
of the night with a drive of
63 yards that included a
Hart-to-Ernest Greene
completion of 24 yards and
a 21-yard touchdown run
by Walker with 3:15 left in
the half.
Westfield wasted little
time in hitting the score
board again after intermis
sion as Jones bolted for a
70-yard score on the sec
ond play of the half. It was
the fourth time in six games
the Hornets have scored a
touchdown on their first
possession of the second
half! Will Holt scored on a
12-yard run and Matthew
Hulbert scored from a yard
out on his only carry of the
night. Holt had his best
