19-3 lead into the locker

Whatever it is that Ronnie
Jones and his staff tells the
team at halftime, it seems to
be working. For the fourth
straight game, and the fifth
time in seven games, the
Hornets scored a touchdown
on their first possession of
the second hall.
The Eagles got the belli to
start the half, but three
downs and a punt later, the

Diving up his final year ol
football eligibility at Liberty
University has paid off for
Brian Nash of Perry.
The 1996 Westfield grad
uate, who is an avid golfer,
decided last year to enter
competition for the National
Long Driving competition.
To qualify, golfers must win
otic of many district compe
titions across the country'.
To earn a spot in a dis
trict. competition, a golfer
must first win a state event.
Mash had won two previous
state events, but railed to
qualify to win a district
before the entered the Okla
homa state competition in
late September.
After winning in Okla
homa with a blast of 387
yards. Nash then went to
the Missouri Driving Com
petition. His drive of 343
yards qualified him for the
final 64. the Re/Max Nation
al Long Driving Competition
to be held in Mesquite,
Nevada beginning Oct. 20.
When asked why his dis
trict winning distance was
"just" 343 yards. Nash said.
“It had rained steadily. The
course was wet. and tne dis
tance was all carry, no roll
at all.”
There will be eight groups
of eight competitors, each
squaring off Oct. 20 for a
chance at first prize of
$75,000 out of a total purse
of $250,000. All of the 64
finalists are guaranteed at
least SI,OOO.
The eight groups will each
have one winner. Those
eight finalists will compete
Oct. 23. The event will be
filmed to be shown Dec. 25

to 26-3, and for all intents
and purposes, this game was

game with four straight hits,
scoring twice on an RBI sin

The Eagles came back in
their half of the first to tie the
score at 2-all before Westfield
erupted for four more runs in
their third inning to take a 6-
2 lead. Moore walked and
Todd doubled ahead of
Peake’s RBI single. With one
out, Hunnicutt singled home
Todd and both runners
moved up on a ground out by
Bennett. Thompson’s single
scored both Peake and Hun
nicutt,
Brentwood went back
ahead in the fourth, though,
scoring four times for a
lead. After the Eagles scored
two in the fifth for a 9 6 lead,
the Lady Hornets scratched
out three in the seventh to tie
the score at 9-all.
With one out, Moore was
safe on an error and scored
on Todd's second double of
tne game and third of the
tournament. After Peake sin
gled, Barrett drove Todd
home with a single and both
runners moved up when
Hunnicutt singled to load the
bases.
Bennett’s sacrifice fly got
Peake home to tie the game,
but the Eagles got of the jam
as the Lady Hornets left two
the second inning. The
inning included two unas
sisted put outs at third by
Corcoran.
Northside came back to
score three runs in the last
inning of play on two hits but
they could not overcome the
wide margin the Panthers
enjoyed.
Teryn Williams. Corcoran,
and Heather Morrill had the
only three Panther hits in the
score of 40-3.
