Here’s a Salute to Peanut Farmers During
Georgia Peanut Bank Week
October 11-15, 1999
An Economic Harvest for Georgia
• In Georgia, peanuts account for nearly 41% of the total cash
crop income. Peanuts have been the official state crop since 1994.
• In 1998, the total harvested peanut acres in the state were nearly
540.000. In an average y;ar Georgia will have a yield per acre of
2,815 pounds and production of over 1.5 billion pounds of peanuts.
•Agricultural statistics indicate that over 50,000 persons are
directly employed in the production of peanuts. Thousands of
Georgians are involved in shelling and processing peanuts, provid
ing over $2 billion to the state's economy.
•In 1998, more than 14,000 Georgia Farms produced peanuts for
net farm receipts of over $402 million.
• Over 95% of Gerogia's peanuts are the Runner type with less
than 5% of both Virginia and Spanish types.
•Peanuts are grown commercially in over 80 of Georgia's 159
counties with the average farm size of about 90 acres.
•Over 30% of the peanuts shipped in exports come from Georgia.
The U.S. exports to over 50 countries where an increase of over
200% has occurred since 1973.
*You're the winner, because Georgia peanuts and banking are both
investments in healthy dividends, providing food for hte table and
a boost to the economy.
