Kountry Kookers do Perry proud at Vienna Pig Jig
Local barbecue team wows judges on their first try

The cooking team of
Donny Free. Scott Free,
Chuck Williams, Brad
James, Tim Goolsby, and
Dave Braun went hog wild
Oct. 1-4 at the Big Pig Jig in
Vienna.
For their efforts, they
brought home the sixth
place plaque in the whole
hog category.
“This was our first time to
do competition cooking.
We’re excited about winning
sixth place," said Donny
Free. “We all did the cook
ing. Tim, Scott, and I are
Just country type cooks, but
the others Chuck, Dave,
and Tim are gourmet
cooks ”
Williams said, “The
ambassador told us it is an
honor just to be on stage
and that is a lot to be proud
of. However, for a first time
team to place well, that
is almost unheard of."
The Big Pig Jig in Vienna
is the third largest pork
barbecue cook-off in the
state. The 1999 event had
approximately 144 teams
entered.
Winning took not only
hard iabor, fine cooking
techniques, and team work,
but it involved presentation.

“Wizard of Hog.’ We had to
decorate our area like a
scene from “Wizard of Oz."
We used a yellow brick
road, a scarecrow, and
instead of an apple in the
hog’s mouth, we used a
red shoe," said Scott Free.
The team used William's
New Covenant Church
to host revival
The New Covenant
Church, located off I-75,
Exit 42 (Marshallville
Road) will host a revival
with the Rev. Greg Lowery
as speaker.
The revival begins Oct.
17, with services at 6 p.m.
on Sunday night, continu
ing through Oct. 20, with
services at 7; 30.
According to the Rev.
David A. Smith, Pastor,
“All are invited to be with
us for the revival."

was officially incorporated
on Aug. 31. The purpose of
the foundation is to assist
and support the Houston
County School System
through strong family,
community, volunteer, and
financial participation and
contribution.
The first board of direc
tor meeting was held on
Sept. 28 at the Daniels,
Lawson. Tuggle and Jerles

are Earl Cheek, Gwen

“It took five pick-up
trucks, three trailers, and
one RV to support six peo
ple,” said James, adding
the team worked from
break of dawn on Oct. 1 to
the late afternoon of Oct.

Judging was done by
three sanctioned judges.
Each judge was served
individually at a table with
fine china, crystal, silver
ware and linens.
“We even had flowers
and brass candlesticks,"
said James.
The team refused to
divulge their secret recipe
but did say they have a
small catering company
called Four Star Catering
and they would be happy
to come and cook up a hog
for anyone.
Sponsors for the team
were Chuck’s Bait and
Tackle, A-For-Able Homes,
and Coldwell, Robbins,
and Free Realty.
Giles, and Tiena Fletcher.
The board adopted the
articles of incorporation
and bylaws, as well as
selected Cheek as the
Chairman, Giles as the
Vice-Chairman, and
Fletcher as the Secretary-
Treasurer.
“Our young people and
teachers can benefit greatly
from the Heritage Founda
tion," said Cheek. “This
endeavor will be well
received in Houston Coun
ty. I'm sure that we will get
the support of all the peb
ble in the county."
