As I drove over those beauti
ful mountains, through
Asheville and on down to Lan
drum. my thoughts went back
to the gentleman from Yancey
County who had so graciously
shared his faith and reminded
me that “this is the day the
Lord had made." Once in Lan
drum, those words helped me
to better deal with some situa
tions that were not entirely
pleasant there.
The comment made by the
station attendant in Yancey
County reminds me of a short
story 1 once read. It seems this
millionaire had told the preach
er that he just couldn't give 10
percent of his money to the
church. He said it was costing
him a fortune and he just
couldn't do it.
The preacher said. "How

p.m. to 6 p.m. lately? Now he
talks about purchasing rights

Parkway and Russell Parkway
extensions. What's happened
to widening Houston Lake
Road other than temporarily
deeding it to the state?
Even though 1 do not agree
with Mayor Walker's annexa
tion policy (He's getting close to
my property). I do agree we
should have some type of audit
of the county records and be
considering the elimination ol
most of the county government.
Luckily, the citizens had the
forethought of imposing the
tax cap.

Finally, the story is told of a
freak accident that killed the
Pope, Billy Graham and Oral
Roberts. When the trio got up to
the Golden Gates. Heaven was
not ready for the three spiritual
heavyweights right then, so St.
Peter sent them down to stay
with the devil for a short while.
It wasn't long before the devil
called St. Peter and told him he
had to get the three out of his
place right away. St. Peter
asked why, and die devil told
him. "The Pope has forgiven
everybody. Billy Graham has
saved half of my residents and
Oral Roberts has raised enough
money for air conditioning."
Yes, this is the day the Lord
has made. Let us rejoice and be
glad in it!"

Here are some helpful safe
ty practices for parents:
• Always walk with the chil
dren and visit only the houses
that are well-lit. Children
should not go out alone.
• Teach children to accept
only wrapped or sealed treats
and to examine treats careful
beiore eating them.
• Always use sidewalks and
walk facing traffic. Carry a
flashlight.
• Organize a neighborhood
Halloween party to keep chil
