Two Perryans charged in gang-related robbery

Two Perry men have been arrested
and charged with attempted armed
robbery following an incident at the
Fuel South gas station along Macon
Road.
According to Perry Police Chief
George Potter, Darius Howard. 18,
and Brian Sparks, 17. have been
charged with an attempted robbery
of Fuel South.
Potter said that “Our investigation
shows the two young men are gang
members", and that the crime,
along with two other recent rob
beries in Perry, was gang-related.

of Sparks and Howard took place

blue scarf, and a red bandanna over

Perry City Manager Lee Gilmour said,
"Not many government bodies have this,
and on my behalf. I am proud of this

The accomplishment which brings such
high praise is the Award of Financial
Reporting Achievement that - the City of
Perry recently received.
The City finance department earned the
award for the comprehensive annual finan
cial report for the fiscal year ending June
30. 1998.
According to the Government Finance
Officers Association, the certificate is the
“highest form of recognition in governmen
tal accounting and financial reporting, and

threatened the cashier with a gun.
The cashier, who apparently believed
that the gun was a fake, chased the
intruder out of the store and then
called police.
Responding to the call, officers
stopped a vehicle driven by Howard,
who was turning onto Swift Street
just a short distance from the store.
They reportedly found a pair of
shoes, and some 32 caliber bullets
in the car. Howard was arrested

were found near Perry Presbyterian
Church. Investigation led to the
arrest of Sparks at Perry High
School on Nov. 2.
Howard, who reportedly physical

The City of Perry Finance Department
has been awarded this certificate for three'
years straight.
Perry Mayor Jim Worrall commented, “It
is something special. We are very proud of
our accounting department."

Sparks is also charged with
attempted armed robbery, and Potter
will seek indictment on charges of
possession of a firearm In the com
mission of a felony, and aggravated
assault. Potter said that a videotape
from the store records Sparks threat
ening to kill the cashier.
Potter said that “Sparks was try
ing to get into a gang by committing
a crime apparently trying to prove
himself." He added that these
arrests, along with arrests madd fol
lowing a package store robbery dur
ing the Georgia National Fair, and a
money-snatching at a local Chinese
restaurant, have put six gang mem
bers in custody.
