GETTING READY Presenting a pro
gram on Y2k readiness Jor the Perry
Chamber of Commerce's Good Morning
Y2K
“There was a Y2K problem
in major industries about 5
years ago, but not today. I
do not believe there will be
any widespread blackouts or
such happening.” said Lima,
adding what will be a prob
lem is pre-event panic.
“Everybody will do line
until Dec. 26. then the panic
will begin,” said Lima.
He said banks will be
closed Jan. 1 because it is a
holiday, not because they
cannot do business. "ATMs
will be in service. However, it
everyone lines up at mid
night to withdraw the maxi
mum allowed, it will run out
of funds. No one will be one
hand to refill the machines
every 30 minutes. The Unit
ed States is the best place to
be. There is no reason to
panic."
Concurring with Lima,
Gilmour said the City of Perry
is “ready. We have certified
our services. You will have
water and gas, as well as all
standard city services."
Gilmour said the City's
major concern is public
safety. “We will have full
staff in our fire, police, and
utilities departments. We arc
not talking about high pro
file appearance; we just
want to ensure the citizens
will be safe. We don't expect
a problem, but we are
preparing."
According to Greene, the
electric companies are ready
and geared up for the com
ing year. "Nothing in the
power distribution centers
were found to be Y2K prob
lematic. In fact, the only
problem found was in cus
tomer billing and we correct
ed it. Were Y2K compliant
and will continue to serve
our customers as we have

for 67 years."
“There are 42 EMCs in
Georgia. Each is indepen
dently managed and operat
ed. Georgia cooperatives
serve 157 counties and 73
percent of Georgia's land
area. Oglethorpe Power, a
generation and transmission
company owned by 38 of the
42 cooperatives, co-owns six
of Georgia’s power plants.
These are eo-owned by Geor
gia Power. Municipal Electric
Authority ol Georgia, and City
of Dalton. These plants are
Y2K ready and since they are
co-owned, if they are ready
for one, they are ready for all
providers in Georgia,” said
Greene.
So who is responsible for
ensuring the readiness? The
answer varies. The National
Electric Utility Grid’s
National Electric Reliability
Council was appointed by
the U.S. Department of
Energy to ensure the Y2K
compliance of these plants.
"The four co-owners have
responsibility for the Y2K
readiness of Georgia's power
plants and transmission
lines. Your local power
provider is responsible for
the Y2K readiness of its dis
tribution systems. You are
responsible for the Y2K
readiness of operations
inside your home," said
Greene.
“Properly inform yourself.
Remember that power out
ages can occur for reasons
unrelated to Y2K. If you
choose to install a generator,
have it installed by a licensed
electrician, install a double
throw switch, and notify your
power provider of its exis
tence." said Greene. She said

installed generator are used.
King, too, said the electric
companies are ready for the
new year. “Georgia Power
and its parent. Southern
Co., was declared compliant
last June.”
“No Y2K blackout is
expected. If any do occur, it
will be of short duration.
Nothing to panic about,”
said King.
King said most electric
companies are currently
running on the 2000 calen
dar and “do not anticipate
any problems; however, we
will be staffed up."
King said, “We are not
worried about Y2K. We're
more concerned about
someone who celebrates way
too much and gets entangled
with a utility pole knock
ing out the electricity in an
entire neighborhood. Then
someone panics and it
begins to look something
like the 'War of the Worlds.’
“We will be keeping the
lights on in 2000," said King.
As for medical concerns,
Causey said, “There is no rea
son for concern. We’ve been
addressing the Y2K problem
since 1997 and we have been
compliant since 1998."

“We found some things non

replaced those things. We have
checked with our suppliers to
verify they too are Y2K compli

Causey said all of Hous

it won’t be different this
