D.A.R.E. students share experiences in graduation essays

"Drug use will leave you down and
out with no place to go,” said one
D.A.R.E. essay writer, Danielle Nelson.
The Ferry D.A.R.E. program held its
annual essay finalists readings Dec. 10
at the Public Safety Building. Finalists
from Perry Elementary and Morning
side Elementary competed for top hon
ors.
Kendall said Westfield School was
scheduled to attend the event as well,
but a conflict occurred and Westfield
Schools had to cancel.
D.A.R.E. Officer Keith Kendall said.
“We had such fine essays this year, it
was nearly impossible to narrow down

come to an end and for
D.A.R.E. officer Bill Hath
cock the end of his tenure as
Perry's main D.A.R.E. officer
has come to an end.
“I'm going to miss the
kids, the teachers, and the
program,” said Hathcock.
According to Perry Police
Chief George Potter, “We
really appreciate his effort to
make the D.A.R.E. program
work. He put a lot of himself
into teaching the youngsters
about the dangers of drugs."
Hathcock has been reas
signed to patrol duty.

Rawls. Kurt Wagner, Princeton Dean,
Nikki Thompson, Adam Yasin, Chris
ten Whitehead, Benjamin Collins,
Megan Holloway, Danielle Nelson, and
Brad Oliver, read their essays to those
attending the event. Westfield students
Ellie Dannenber, John Blount, Trish
Davis, and David Garrett read their
essays at graduation.

tain William Phelps, and Sgt. Brian
Childress, had the ultimate task of
picking a winner from each of the two
schools.

During Hathcock's tenure
as D.A.R.E. officer, he
graduated 5,000
from the program since the
program’s 1989 induction in
Perry.
Hathcock is currently the
State President for the
D.A.R.E. Association.

Learning Center December 14 to teach the
Pre-K students the way to stay safe.

Rawls’ essay stated, “D.A.R.E.
means to me that drugs are really evil.”
Thompson wrote, “Thanks to
D.A.R.E. I know I am cool without
using drugs or alcohol.”
Phelps said, “Evciyone did an out
standing job. It isn’t easy being a
judge.” He announced the winners-
Danielle Nelson and Adam Yasin, and
presented them with a medal for their
efforts. Phelps also presented the other
finalists with medals.
Westfield Schools graduation was
Dec, 14.. The other schools’ D.A.R.E.
graduations were Dec. 13, for Morning
side Elementary and Dec. 16 for Perry
Elementary.
