“Insight On Eyesight ”
What is Astigmatism?
by Dr. J. Mathis Dixon,
Eyesight Associates
“Astigmatism” is a word that is
hard to pronounce, harder to spell
and even harder to define. Dictio
naries describe it as a structural
defect of the eye that prevents light
rays emanating from an object
from meeting at a single focal
point, resulting in the formation of
indistinct images.
Confused? Try comparing a
basketball with a football. A bas
ketball has the same shape in all
directions. A football curves more
in one direction than the other. An
astigmatic cornea is shaped more
like a football than a basketball,
