every race day but hey ... apples and oranges ...
Texas and Kansas ... it’s all the same.
Sort of.
“They’re similar, but Chicago is a little faster
with a little more banking,” said Jeff Gordon in
comparing the one a half mile tri-oval to that of
Kansas which from a glance looks exactly the
same. Gordon shares a bond with Harvick in
that he is the only driver to \Vin at Kansas.
“The setups are close but not exact, and the
way you drive them is similar but not exact. It’s
definitely a track I would like to win at but win
ning a championship is more important in the
long run.”
MEN ARE FROM MARS: Don’t look now but
Ken Schrader is about to jump back into an
M&M’s car. No, Elliott Sadler hasn’t been fired
(has he?) but Schrader will be driving a ride
sponsored by the candy manufacturer in the sec
ond annual M&M’s Night of the Stars July 30 in
Pevely Missouri.
The race a 10-lap shootout with NASCAR
drivers racing in dirt modified cars is part of
a promotion to raise money for the Victory
Junction Gang Camp, a entity whose mission is
geared toward helping children with chronic
and life-threatening illnesses.
Last year the same event raised $114,626 for
the cause.
NOT HELEN: Got milk? Jason Keller does.
The driver of the No. 57 Albertsons/Jewel-
Osco/Got Milk?-sponsored Ford in the Busch
Series will be driving in the Chicagoland minor
league race Saturday at Chicagoland Speedway
and then trying to qualify a Chevrolet for Dale
Earnhardt Incorporated car in the Winston Cup
race Sunday ...
Also, Dale Earnhardt Jr. jumped back in front
of Jeff Gordon as the man in closest striking dis
tance to Matt Kenseth. On the other hand,
Kenseth still leads by 180 points.
That’s the biggest point spread with 19 races
remaining since Ernie Irvan led Dale Earnhardt
senior by 163 points in 1994 ...
SIMPLY A GAS: One and two and three ...
(long, long gap) and 6,349,000.
That’s how many households Nielsen Media
Research came up with that watched the run
ning of the Pepsi 400. All totaled they said
9,691,000 viewers watched. Weren’t us viewers
nice in rounding it off for them ...

DRIVE THE TRUCK: Just what we’ve been
waiting for: UPS plans on showing its latest

during the race Sunday. Can’t wait ...
UPS also announced Monday that Dale

The scheme will be painted yellow as the pri

Armstrong's bid for (Nth
Tour title begins in earnest
The Association Press
SAINT-DIZIER, France Now
Lance Armstrong gets serious.
His bid for a fifth straight Tour de
France title begins in earnest
Wednesday in team time trials. By
day's end, Armstrong hopes to be
wearing the leader's yellow jersey.
That would put him in excellent
position before cycling's showcase
race heads into the arduous climbs
up the Alps on Saturday.
Armstrong conserved his
strength Tuesday and finished 69th
in the third stage, won by Italy's
Alessandro Petacchi. Armstrong is
12th overall, 19 seconds behind
leader France's Jean-Patrick
Nazon.
On Wednesday, squads race
separately against the clock over a
43-mile course. Each rider gets his
team's time, meaning Armstrong's
challengers _ or Armstrong himself
could lose vital seconds or min
utes if their squads perform badly.
Wednesday "is really the first
decisive move of the race," said
Dan Osipow, general manager of
Armstrong's U.S. Postal Service
team.
"With a bad team time trial, you
can lose a handful of minutes and
where do you find those minutes
again when the Alps come?" he
said. ’We want to gain time on all of
our rivals."
Armstrong's squad races last
because it leads the overall stand
ings among the Tour's 22 teams.
That will allow the riders to see how
‘ Armstrong's rivals did.
The route from Joinville to Saint-
Dizier starts with a significant climb.
Officials from Armstrong’s team
scouted the route Tuesday.
"The beginning's hard,"
Armstrong said.
Last year, U.S. Postal placed
second, 16 seconds behind the
Once team.
Armstrong is trying to match the
record of Spain's Miguel Indurain,
who won five straight Tours from
1991-95.
He has played it safe so far, try
ing to avoid accidents that pose a
constant risk in the first week when
riders are fresh and sprinters try to
make the most of relatively flat and
fast stages.
