employees, may have been con
sidered, but Walmer said the
board made a unanimous deci
sion to go with Carpenter.
“We spoke as one group
today,” he said.
Wilson noted that Holloway’s
departure was a “win-win situ
ation” for both the superin
tendent and the board.
“We are moving forward in a
positive manner,” he said. “If it
takes 18 months to find a new
superintendent, Danny has said
he’s willing to serve.”
Holloway noted, “Even after
the first of August, I’m just a
phone call away.”
Also at Tuesday’s meeting,
the board:
• Gave Assistant
Superintendent for Human
Resources Ron Busbee the
authority to hire up to seven
teachers, at an average cost of
$55,000, due to increased new
student matriculation. They
also authorized him to hire four
state-funded pre-kindergarten
teachers.
• Accepted the portion of its
mandatory reporting policy
that had been reviewed by the
board attorney. Board members
drafted the policy to deal with
reporting of employee crimes,
after a middle school teacher
was dismissed earlier this year
after alleged inappropriate con
tact with a student.

The dog, apparently struck by
a car on July 4, found his way to
Beckley Appalachian Regional
Hospital, hobbled through the
sliding glass doors and waited
for assistance in the hallway.
“It’s the darndest thing,” said
Ted Weigel, marketing director
at Beckley. “The dog limped in

exactly where to go for help.”
Hospital workers gave the dog
water, called a veterinarian and
offered to pay the bill.
“There’s no way they were
going to put an injured animal
back on the street,” Weigel said.
Dr. Roger Ward treated the
animal, and the vet said the
canine suffered road burns,
scrapes and an infected wound
on his leg.
The 7-year-old male dog has
been a model patient, Ward
said.
