Bids opened for Tommie Hunt building
Perry businessmen
submit offers
By Emily Johnstone
HHJ Associate Editor
WARNER ROBINS - As hope
ful bidders for the Tommie S.
Hunt Courthouse Annex
watched Tuesday afternoon,
envelopes containing purchase
offers were opened.
Two Perry businessmen,
accountant Carey Baxter repre
senting the firm of Chambliss,
Sheppard, Roland and Baxter,
and architect Jim Mehserle,
owner of JMA Architecture,
submitted bids for the building.
Houston County Director of
Management Services Steve
Engle and Director of
Purchasing Barry Holland
opened bids in the boardroom of
the courthouse annex on Carl
Vinson Parkway.
Minutes later, Mehserle was
shaking Baxter’s hand and
offering congratulations for his
high bid of $151,000 - a mere
$389 more than Mehserle’s bid
of $150,611.
As a matter of fact, Holland
said that could be the closest
bidding ever on a county build
ing.
Final approval for the bids
will come at the next commis
sioner’s meeting July 15.
Commissioners must vote on
accepting the bid.
Meanwhile, a beaming Baxter
said he plans to move his office
into the 4,000-plus-square-foot
building located across the
street from the old courthouse
in downtown Perry.
He said his office will be
where the old tag office used to
be. The rest of the building will
be available for tenants, he said.
Holland said the original use
of the building was as a grocery
store. Later, it housed a furni-

While most people can’t con
ceive fat is essential and most
are trying to decrease their fat
intake, in fact there are some
essential fats that you must
consume to be healthy, and I’m
not talking about chocolate!
However, there are good
forms of fat and bad forms that
cause many problems. Essential
fatty acids (EFAs) are long
chained unsaturated fats that
must be obtained from your
diet. The two main forms are
omega-6 and omega-3 fatty
acids, but they behave entirely
differently in your body.
Omega-3 fatty acids are high
in flaxseed and fish oils, and
play an important role in the
production of energy, anti
inflammation, anti-oxidants,
and provide the building blocks
for brain function. ,On the other
hand, omega-6 fatty acids are
pro-inflammatory derived from
grain-based foods like wheat
and corn, and excess consump
tion of omega-6 has been associ
ated with arthritis inflamma
tion, fibromyalgia, chronic
fatigue syndrome, to name just

ture store and was eventually
purchased by the county to
house several county offices
including the tag office, the
public defender’s office and oth
ers.
It was put up for sale a few
weeks ago after commissioners
declared it surplus.
That came after commission
ers decided to sell or raze some
of their older buildings follow
ing the completion of the new
courthouse on Perry Parkway.
Engle said it was obvious both
Mehserle and Baxter put a lot of
thought into their bid offers.
Holland said over the past few
weeks he showed the building to
seven different individuals or
groups who represented Perry
businesses.
Baxter said he does not plan
to move the plaque on the front
of the building placed there
honoring Tommie S. Hunt, a
former court clerk who served
the county about four decades.

Cullen Talton remembers Hunt
as a “true public servant” who
would go beyond the call of duty
in his work.
“He was a prince of a fellow,”
Talton said. “He was a true
Southern gentleman, too.”
Today’s Houston County
Superior Court Clerk Carolyn
Sullivan worked with Hunt
from 1965 until his death in
1982.
“He was a great man,” she
said.

achy all the time.
Another problem with EFAs
occurs when heated, hydro
genated, or exposed to air which
causes the EFAs to transform
from the normal cis-form to
what’s called a trans-form,
interfering with many normal
metabolic functions by causing
the cell to become more rigid
and inflexible. In fact, trans
fatty acids are solid at body
temperature, not fluid like the
normal cis-fatty acids. Trans
fatty acids set the stage for
inflammation, heart disease,
autoimmune disorders, skin
problems, fatigue, dry scalp and
hair, and infections.
Sadly, the most common
source of trans-fatty acids
include French fries, chicken
nuggets, deep-fried fish, chips,
pastries, cookies, cakes and
margarine. Not only do fast

larger health problems in adult
