Various members of the audi

proposed rental development as
inconsistent with the promise of
future single-family homes.
When asked what he would do
if the new development failed
due to competition from the
proposed 3,000-lot retirement
community planned out U.S.

he couldn’t worry about what
others might or might not do.
“I don’t think anyone in this
room would plan their future
based on what someone else is
planning,” Free said.
This comment elicited angry
mumblings from the crowd and
one cry, “We did!”
Eventually, Mayor James
Worrall had to calm the crowd
and ask that they speak one at a

For use at DFCS during this
waiting time or during a time of
transition for the child or teen,
the following items would be
helpful.
• Diapers in all sizes, pull
ups, wipes
• Fast food gift certificates ...
for use when transporting chil
dren, or when children wait in
the office to be placed.
• Non-perishable food items
... juice boxes, packs of crack
ers, cookies, snack items
• Kid-friendly items from the
“Hellokids” catalog. These are
the type of things you find in
the waiting rooms of pediatric
offices and some are quite
expensive, but they are easy to
clean, have no loose parts and
children really love them. The

Businesses can help, too. A
good example during May was
set by two Houston County
businesses when foster parents
were treated to a rare night out,
with dinner provided by
Sonny’s Real Pit Bar-B-Q, while
the children were entertained
at D.J.’s Galaxy Quest.
Donations can be very help
ful. Foster parents must buy
cribs, beds and other furniture
for children in their care. The
children need toys, school sup
plies and all the things other
children need.

Jerles told the crowd that a
PUD zoning would mean any
future changes have to come
through the council, unlike an
R-l zoning.
“This has more restrictions
on it than what you’re asking
for,” he said. “You don’t like it,
but ultimately it protects you
better.”
Several mumblers agreed
that, yes, they didn’t like it.
. Philip Mitchem, a resident of
the area, then addressed the
council.
He cited a June 22 petition,
signed by 106 residents, in
which they asked the council to

“We had a developer with a
dream ... the reason we’re here
today is that dream didn’t work
out,” he said.
The new plans are not what
those who moved here, invested
much in homes, expected or
wanted, Mitchem said. Under
the changes, they will suffer, he
said.
“We 80 people who own
homes are the ones who are
going to bear the brunt of the
pain*” To the council, he con

There was a brief round of
applause before a short silence.
Jerles then took the floor again.
“I struggled with this, and I
just can’t see the harm that’s
been portended,” he said, and
then moved that the council
approve the rezoning.
