'Terminator 3' offers thrills, excitement
Movie Review
“Terminator 3: Rise of the
Machines”
(Warner Brothers)
By Jaokie K. Cooper
HHJ Entertainment Writer
The third segment in the
“Terminator” series of films has
arrived and there is no sign of a
letdown in the quality or enter
tainment or the quantity of
action events. “Terminator 3:
Rise of the Machines” starts up
a few years after the second one
left off and moves on with a
rush.
John Connor (Nick Stahl
replacing Edward Furlong) is
still the central character. He
knows that it is his destiny to
save the planet so to speak, but
he is trying to avoid that duty. A
“terminator,” or more appropri
ately a “terminatrix,”
(Kristanna Loken) arrives from
the future with his destruction
on her robotic brain.
Shortly after she arrives
another “terminator” appears.
This one, played by Arnold
Schwarzenegger, is pro
grammed to protect John
Connor. He also must protect
Kate Brewster (Claire Danes)
who will have an important role
in the future.
The fireworks start almost
immediately and the film is a
roller coaster ride from begin
ning to end. The film looks as if

“Going For Broke”
(Lifetime)
By Jackie K. Cooper

Delta Burke and real life
husband Gerald Mcßaney star
in the Lifetime original movie
“Going For Broke.” In this
film Burke plays a woman
with a serious gambling prob
lem, one that leads her to lose
all that she holds dear. The
story is based on true events
and packs a powerful punch.
Laura (Burke) and Jim
(Mcßaney) Bancroft move
from Florida to Reno, Nevada
where Laura has a new posi
tion as the head of a charitable
organization. Laura’s two chil
dren move with them and the
family at first seems to settle
into a new routine of work,
school and play.
The road downward starts
when Laura discovers Video
Poker. What starts off as a few
nickels and quarters here and
there soon escalates into hun
dreds of dollars. She becomes
so obsessed with playing the
slots and poker machines that
she forgets about her husband,
her family and her job.
When she begins embezzling
money from her organization
she knows she is beyond help,
but still she doesn’t stop. She

“Between Sisters”
By Kristin Hannah

Kristin Hannah is at her best
with her new novel ““Between
Sisters.” This one combines her
gift for inventive plots with out
standing characters, and emo
tional turmoil. The book seems
on its surface to be predictable,
but Hannah has a few tricks up
her sleeve which are bound to
amaze and entice the reader.
Meghann Dontess and Claire

close, they have now drifted
apart. When they were children
Meg took care of Claire when
their neglectful mother was not
around. Eventually their moth

had to find Claire’s father and
ask him to care for the young
girl. He did so gladly, but Meg

tragedy can stop it.
This is no Suzanne
Sugarbaker role for Burke.
Laura Bancroft is a complex
woman who displays a variety
of emotions. Burke is up to the
challenge of portraying them
all. Mcßaney is also good as
her stunned husband. His part
is smaller than Burke’s but he
still gives a good balance to the
story.

complete indifference to
ignore the pain and pathos on
display here.
This is one of the Lifetime
Channel’s most dramatic
offerings. It is a story that lays
bare the tragedy and trauma
of compulsive gambling. It is a
story that should be watched
and discussed by families as a
whole.

“Free For All”
(Showtime)
By Jackie K. Cooper

Showtime is getting into the
Comedy Channel arena with its
new animated series “Free For
All.” This show is billed as
being irreverent and in truth it
does try to out-adult and out
shock an audience that has
grown up on “South Park”
humor.
The story line follows the
adventures or life occurrences
of a teen-ager named Johnny.
He lives at home with his father
and grandmother. His best

“Sinbad”
(Dream Works)
By Jackie K. Cooper
HHJ Entertainment Writer
Dream Works Pictures new
animated adventure, “Sinbad,”
will not go down in the books as
a classic but it is fun for the
moment. With beautiful anima
tion, a rousing story of adven
ture and romance, and the vocal
talents of some of Hollywood’s
brightest stars; the movie has a
lot going for it.
friend is a super smooth guy
named Clay. Johnny is the odd
man out in this group as they all
take advantage of him.
Clay has a ferret that is
addicted to drugs. Johnny feels
his grandmother is trying to
force him out of his room. He
and Clay make a bargain.
Johnny will get the ferret off
drugs and Clay will get
Johnny’s grandmother off his
back.
This story is told with an
abundance of sexual innuen
does and more than enough pro
fanity to earn it an R rating.
Obviously the people behind
this show ascribe to the theory
that grosser is better.
The film opens with Sinbad
(Brad Pitt) and his crew of
pirates attacking a ship cap
tained by Proteus (Joseph
Fiennes). Proteus has the
“Book of Peace” in his posses
sion and Sinbad thinks he can
steal it and hold it for ransom.
But Proteus and Sinbad once
were friends and now that
friendship arises again between
them so Sinbad changes his
plans.
Eres (Michelle Pfeiffer), the
goddess of chaos, also wants the
“Book of Peace.” She steals it

“Ahm bock!” and this brings a
roar from the audience. He also
appears to be in the same tip top
physical condition he was when
we last saw him in “Terminator
2.”
Loken is a solid addition to
the cast and makes her “termi
natrix” an ultra mean, sexy
machine. This “terminatrix”
can change shapes and more.
She is a lot like the “termina
tor” played by Robert Patrick in
“T 2” but with many more pow
ers. When she and Arnold do
battle she tosses him around as
much as he tosses her - and it is
all believable.
Stahl and Danes don’t add
much to the film. But they are
the ones to be protected so they
don’t have to be gung-ho sol
diers. If you thought Danes was
taking over the Linda Hamilton
role think again. And by the
way, the presence of Ms
Hamilton is missed.
The film is rated R for vio
lence, profanity and nudity.
If you crave excitement and
thrills then this is the movie for
you. In a summer of slightly
subpar sequels this one rules.
Arnold is back and he brought a
lot of excitement with him. Now

I scored “Terminator 3: Rise
of the Machines” an endless 8
out of 10.
The voices of the characters
are supplied by Jonathan
Silverman, Brett Merhar,
Juliette Lewis, Mitzi McCall
and Sam McMurray. They don’t
add anything exciting by their
participation.
This comedy series is another
bad attempt to use profanity
and sex talk as a means by
which to be entertained. It does
n’t work. After the initial shock
value wears off it becomes just
another simple cartoon series
that isn’t funny or interesting.

subsequent Fridays at this same
time.
