Christina Applegate, Martin Short and Sean Maguire star in “Prince Charming.”
'Charming' a modern fairy tale
TV Review
“Prince Charming” (TNT)
By Jackie K. Cooper
HHJ Entertainment Writer
TNT offers us a fairy tale
with a modern day setting in
the new original film “Prince
Charming.” An all star cast
brings this enchanting and yes,
charming, story to life. It may
not be a fairy tale for the ages
but for a few short hours it is a
pleasant way to spend an
evening.
The film starts out 500 years
ago in a European country
where a handsome young prince
(Sean Maguire) is promised to a
princess (Christina Applegate)
in a neighboring kingdom. But
Prince John is a callow prince
and can not bring himself to be
faithful to one woman. So he
dishonors the fair princess
before they can be wed and as a
result he and his Squire (Martin
Short) are changed into frogs.

The curse is such that they
will stay frogs until the prince is
kissed. This will turn them back
into humans. Then the prince
has five days in which to marry
the woman who loosened the
curse, and he must be faithful
to her all the rest of his life.
Five hundred years pass and
the two frogs are captured by a
young boy who transports them
back to New York. There the
prince is kissed by an actress
named Margot (Bernadette
Peters). He and his squire are
turned into humans and have to
seek Margot out in all of New
York City. They are aided by a
hansom driver named Kate
(Applegate again).
They finally find Margot but
by now Prince John is in love
with Kate. Still he doesn’t want
to become a frog again so he
starts trying to get Margot to
marry him. He is assisted by the
squire named Rodney and

Finally it looks like John and
Margot are going to wed but
this being a fairy tale you know
it has to end up with a happy
ever after ending. Still there are
a lot of frenzies, failures and
frogs before that occurs.
The cast does a good job of
keeping this story moving.
Peters, Applegate and Short are
the standouts but all the actors
are competent. New York looks
like a magical kingdom especial
ly in the Central Park area.
This is just a lighthearted
fairy tale that says true love will
break a spell. All of the roman
tics will love it. Plus you can
bring in the kids to watch it
with you, and they should have
a good time too.
“Prince Charming” debuts on
TNT at 8 p.m, Sunday. It
repeats July 17, 18, 19, 23 and

SISTERS—
From page 7A
never felt at home with Claire
and her father. Eventually she
left and this made Claire feel
Meg had abandoned her.
Meg is now in her 40’s and
Claire is in her 30’s when the
book opens. Meg has become
one of the best divorce lawyers
in the state of Washington,
while Claire still lives with her
father and helps him run a
resort camp. Although she has
never married she does have a
daughter named Alison. Meg
has been married and divorced.
Suddenly Claire finds herself
in love, and on impulse she asks
Meg to plan her wedding. This
forced “closeness” between the
two sisters will either heal their
rift or send them further apart.
This is the basic plot of the
book but there is much more
here that I don’t want to spoil.
Suffice it to say, Meg and Claire
go through many traumas in
trying to gain back the close
ness they once felt.
This book will send you on a
roller coaster of emotions. At
one point you will be laughing
out loud and at others you will
be crying on to the pages. You
will also be exposed to a variety
of loves, sister to sister, father
to daughter, mother to daugh
ter and husband to wife. You
name it, its here.
Don’t start this book if you
don’t have time to finish it. It
will grab you and hold you in its
spell and not let you go. Meg
and Claire are two very believ
able characters and their situa
tion is one that is common in
our age of isolation.
If you like books that pack an
emotional punch then race to
get this book. It is chock-full of
a variety of emotional situa
tions.
“Between Sisters” is pub
lished by Ballantine Books. It
contains 383 pages and sells for
$23.95.
SINBAD —
From page 7A
landscape surrounding it are
impressive. And the ships glid
ing on the ocean’s surface make
for beautiful animation sub
jects. It is all done with beauty
and style, and creates awe in
the viewer.
The story itself is only fair.
Strangely the voices of Pitt and
Zeta-Jones add little to the
enjoyment of the movie.
Pfeiffer and Fiennes are more
animated in their delivery and
make their characters more
alive.
The movie is rated PG for
mild violence, suspense and
adult humor.
Young kids may be scared by
the sea serpents in the film
while slightly older children
may get restless because of the
pace of the movie. Still for those
who stick with it the movie does
offer some entertainment.
“Sinbad” won’t win any races
for box office king, but it is a
see-worthy vehicle.
I scored “Sinbad” an oceanic
6 out of 10.
