About
Using the press of the defunct Daily New Era, William L. Scruggs published the Atlanta Whig’s inaugural issue on April 11, 1872 in Atlanta, Georgia. Scruggs’ attachment as editor-in-chief to the Republican Daily New Era resulted in immediate protest from Democratic newspapers before the Whig’s first weekly issue circulated. The Macon Telegraph and Messenger of April 10, 1872, for example, notified its readers that the Whig was ‘the successor of the Era [and] . . . we wish him an abundance of bad luck.’ Scruggs’ attempt to reinvent the publication failed, and the Whig was out of print and up for sale by November 1872.
