United States Circuit Court.
The trial of the eight seaman belong
ing to the smack Hiram, commenced yes
terday b fore Judge Johnston. The first
indictment was taken up, charging them
with piracy on the Xpaivsh schooner San
Pedro, nearthe Island ot Cuba, and after an
investigation that occupied the whole day,
the jury returned h veulict of not guilty.
The court is engaged to-day on the se
cond indictment against them, for piracy
on a Spanish vessel name unknown, also
near the Island of Cuba.
A third indictment remains against them
—the case of'.he Gomopolite—which will
probably be tried to-inon-ow.

refering the final selilemeiits of those
claims to some purpose.

ocr to be made of the fund arising from
he sales of the Public Lauds in the Slates
of Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Alabama,

to those stales respectively.
On motion of Mr. Rates, it was

Lands be instructed to enquire into expe
diency of making provision b) Law for the
final adjustment of the unconfirmed land
c aims in the territory of Aikansas derived
from the French and Spanish government
—and of refering the settlement of those
claims to some tribunal established or to
be created.

ed to enquire into the expediency of oc
cupyiug the Columbia River, and the
Territory of the United States adjacent
thereto, and of regulating the trade with
the Indian tribes ; and that they have
leave to report by bill or otherwise.
On motion of Mr. Butler,
Resolved, That the committee on the
PoA Office and Post Roads he instructed
to enquire into the expediency of provid
ing by law for prohibiting printers and
editors of newspapers, and all other per
sons who are proprietors of any such print
ing establishment, or in any way concerned
in the publication of newspapers, from
being mail contractors or post mailers ;
and also prohibiting post musters from
being mail contractors, or being employ
ed in the conveyance of (he mail.
On motion cl Mr. Walworth,
Resolved, 'That the committee on the
Post Office and Post Roads be insimeted
lo enquire into the expediency of having
the pub ic mail from the city of Albany
to PlaHsburg, and the northern part of the
stale of Ncw-A oi k, transmitted on the east
side of Lake Champlain.
On motion of Mr. Lalhrop,
Resolved, That the committee of Uevi
sal and Unfinished business be introduced
to consider the exjn dicncy of reviving the
several acts of August 2d, 1813, January
9 h, 1815, and March sih, 1816, laying a
direct ia\ within the U. States, so far us to
allow a further time of redemption on the
lairls sold for the non-payment of the tax,
where the same have been purchased on
behalf of tho U. States.
