How Wdrt Pickens Was Fe-ln(breed—Ar
rival ef the Transport Atlantic,
From the N. T. Herald, 2d Inst.
MkSER’fl REPORT OF THE VOYAGE.
Tba »teamsbip Atlantic, A. G. Gray, eota-
mandihg, led Now York on Sunday, April 7,
under tenled orders from the Government.—
At alght A. M. discharged pilot, and at ten A.
M. shipped her course in compliance with or
ders. On Monday, ths 8ih, at four P. M., (be
wiad suddenly shifted and blew fresh from the
•outhweat, aadooatiuued uaiil midcight, when
it increased lo a heavy gsle. In order to save
(be bortea tha ship waa hove io, with her head
to tba Boutheaat. After the gale bad ebsted
wa proceededf on our oourse for Key Weet,
having laid to for thirty six boors.
We arrived and dropped nochor in the outer
roads at Key West, three miles from Fort Tay
lor, at two V. M. on Saturday, the 18th, when
oae of our boats wss sent to Fort Taylor, con
vey log Col. Brown aod his slsff, who bid pro
longed interviews with the United States offi
cers, both military and civil. At seven P.
M. commenced receiving additional troops, ord
nance, ordnance stores, shells, Ac., &c., whioh
ware plaoed on a lighier end towed out lo the
Atlantic by the United States steamer Crusa
der, Csptain Cravon. This labor was continued
without cessation until A. M. of Sunday, the
10th, and at six A. M. we weighed anohor and
steered forTortugae, where we anchored cloee
to FortfJefferson at two P« hi. sama^day. At
this poiut we took on board more officers,
troops, laborers, howitsers, gun carriages,
materials, &o-, and at nine P. M. were under
way for final destination, which was now
known only to Colonel Brown and Captain
Meigs, of the army, and to Captain Gray, of
the Atlantic. During that night and the next
day great curiosity was manifested, and al
though the ship’s course tteemed lo indicate
Fort Pickens, yet it was not until the evening
of Monday, the 15th, that the secret was dis
closed and the re^Enforcement of Fort Piekens
openly announced. Up to this time all was con
jecture ; but now the countenonce of all on
board beamed with the knowledge of aa ap
proaching event.
Activity and preparation took the place of
■uplneness and uncertainly, and the fact that
Fort Piokens could be and should be re Enfor
ced was settled that night.
On Tuesday, the 10th, at half past six
o’clock P. M., we anchored off Santa Rosa Is
land (Fort Pickens being on its western ex
tremity,) four miles from the shore, close by
the frigate Sabine, the flag ship of the squad
ron, Com. Adams. After communicating with
the commander and the naval captains pres
ent we took in tow the boats of the fleet, some
twenty in number, end alter dark weighed
anchor and stood io shore, all lights being ex
tinguished, and came to anohor within a mile
of Fort Piokens, and in direct range of the
guns of Fort McRae and the water batteries,
and three-fourths of a mile from the beach,
in four fathoms of water. At a quarter past
nine the first boat pushed off for the beach,
with Colonel Brown and Captain Meigs, who
were the first lo meet and surprise tha intrep
id Slemmer, aud his command. During the
embarkation of ths troops io the boats the sig
nal from Fort Piokens for an apprehended at
tack was made by the sending up of rookele.
This signal was repeated, and hastened the
operations. Capt. Vodges and other officers in
tba fort ware astonished at the rapidity of the
reinforcement. Before midnight the majority
of officers and soldiers were safely in the fort,
and although a heavy surf wss running dur
ing the night, no accident of any kind occur
red.
This suooessful landing took place thrse
days after (be bombardment and surrender of
Fom Sumter—a faet well known on the main
land, but not known at Fort Piokens nor by
tba forces afloat.
Early in the morning of the 17th, the re
maining troops wire landed, excepting the ar-
iilerymen of Captain Barry’s company, who
remained to land with their horses. At 8 A.
M. ws again weighed anchor and stood to the
eastward and anchored about three and a half
mile* from Fort Pickens aud half a;mile from
tha btaoh. This point was selected ae the best
plaea far landing the horses. The difficult
work was commenced in (he afternoon, con
tinued during the night and finished on the
morning of the 18th.
The United States steam frigate Powhatan,
commanded by Captain David D. Porter, ar
rived on the afternoon of the 17th, and after
communicating with the flag ship, look posi
tion just ahead of us in order to cover the fu
ture landing. In thie movement she was fol
lowed by the Brooklyn, Captain Poor, which
anchoredjunder our stern. The Wyandot was
cruising about—the Sabine, 8t. Louis and
Supply being outside, about three miles dis
tant. The boats of mil the ehips of the squad
ron were actively engaged in landing troops
and stores, &o , from the night of the 16th
until the morning of the 28d. The Illinois,
with rt-ioforcements, arrived at midnight on
Friday, the 19th, and her troops were landed
the next morning.
Seven of the horses were lost; four died on
the pssesge. one was drowned alongside, one
bad bis nsok broken in tba aurf, and one died
from exhaustion on reaobieg tha shore. The
forage and light artillery were landed simul
taneously with (he horses. On the 18th the
landing of the general cargo of heavy and
light ‘ordnance, amunition, provisions, Ac.,
was fairly oommencod and continued,}with but
partial Interruption, until the forenoon of
Tuesday,;28d, when she was Anally dischar
ged, to the great gratifloatlon of all concern
ed. 1
The position of tbs Powhatan and Brooklyn
was suth that tbslr guns could sweep Santa
Raaa Island and* prevent a landing from the
mainland, and at tha same lima shielded Ibe
bull of tbs Atlantic. At no time wes our
•teem allowed ta go down* aa that la cos# of
auaok* or gals, or any emergeny, ws wero
randy Is go off shore. On Monday, Calenel
Brawn, tha commander af the United States
fmoat In Florida, gave to Gnpuin Gray, in
Fort .Picket*, tba assess cry certificate and
orders end denpatebCe far Kay WcbL
for eoal. Ws arrived at Key West at six A. '
M , of the ?6ih, reeking the me it forty-twe
hours. We were bore disappointed to procur
ing coni, aa Mr. Tift, the only privet* owner
of coal* refused ta sail eoal to this or any oth*
er steamer employed by tbs Government— be
being, of oourse, a secessionist. As tbs Mo
hawk and Crusader were abend of ns ai lbs
Government wharf, and Yo have wafted would
have caused great delay, ws weighed anchor,
and ai eloven, A. M. passed Sand Key light,
sad at anndown passed More.Coatle and into
Havana harbor, making the run across in set
an and a quarter hours.
Having completed eoallfj;, at a quarter to
twelve A. M., Saturday, 27th, we got under
way, end at twenty minutes past noon we
paeeed lb# Mero and shaped our course for
Now York, and after a plaaaant passage ar
rived off Sandy Hook on Wednesday morning,
making tbe run in tbres days and eighteen
hours and a half.
