Who is suffering by this arrangement r Not
the Southern Confederacy. We have a good
stock aod plenty of money to buy more. Our
young crops are everything that could be de
sired, and notwithstanding tba eloods of war
seen in tha horison, newer before ware we in
such a state of unexampled prosperity. Money
is in prolusion ; trade ia good ; crops are splen
did : Blocks are large; and what more do we
need?
The threats of the North to devastate our
oouotry is treated w«th that contempt that its
arrogance marits Was every man waman and
child North aod Wast an armed warrior, there
would not be enough ; and where is the money
Iocom* from? Already tba Federal Govern
ment is bankrupt, and its paper is hawked
around Wall Street and sola for less than a
third-rate merchant's The immense subscrip
tions that were paraded before the people as
voluntary contributions of millionaires, grow
•mail by deg>eee end 'beautifully less, and tba
more stirewd capitalists that waited to see
whether the South would falter before they in
vested their funds, very wisely refuse to take
the worthless securities, and well they may,
for what guaranis'* tbeir redemption ? The
great fountain of wealth which has supported
and enriched the Government, has been eut
and the millions of tribute have ceased, and
Lincoln well may exclaim. “If I acknowledge
tka independence of the South, where shall 1
derive the income tosupport ray Government.. 1
Already those wh »have invested tbeir means
in these stocks ere trembling for their solven
cy. Each European steamer's news but adds
to the conviction* that are dawuing oh their
minds, that they are sold and that the foreign
lowers lean to the side of interest, and conse
quently they will iodireclij if not directly
work to the aid vantage of the Confederate State*.
Boon the reaction will come and honied words
will take the place of threats. But the South
ern mind is fixed, end no more trade does that
section receive from the South. Hereafter we
trade with Europe.
