Ceuiusl RaiX Road and Banking Company of Georgiy
PRINCIPAL BANK, )
Sava s.nah, April 21, 1840. 5
Hi* Excellency, Charte* J. McDonald,
Sir :—l present you herewith a statement of the condition of th* inatiration at thi* place You will
receive a return frctn the Branch at Macon, u the recent act of ire Legislature require*. I take the li
berty. however, to send a consolidated return in addition. f-roir erwise it appears to roe. the pnb’ic would
be misled as to the-actual condition of the Company The Branch Notes on hand at the Principal Bank,
and toe Principal Bank Note* on band at the Branch, would doobt’e-s* be overlooked in estrmating the
circulation, by persons ur.accu Aomed to such retorn*. Tbe consolidated return I respectfully submit, u
tetter and give* more clear information than the returns, as caked tor by the act, and I a*k the favor that
be published also.
The return show* the aggregate indebtedness of the Stockholder!. When it is remembered that al
most every ciiizeoof tr.i i comm unity, and a great many a: Macon, are Stockholders, i roust be manifest
that the debtors to the Bank must neceaaarJy he composed in a great measure, of Slock bold era
The discount hne of this ;ns:.:u*;on, a» this place, ;s almost w holly of a business character; the
on accommodation not exceeding §.'10.000. 7 here is but one Stockholder wbo?e indebtedness exceeds
Sio,ooo, ar d the amount due by nhd is considered as safe as any debt doe to the Bank. The members
of the Board of Directors dec;me to make a return on oaih of toeir indebtedness. but are willing to make
a return oftbe lability of aJ I persons, by name, indebted to the Bank. This determination ctoe« not arise
from any fear of exposure, for the fact is, that the vvboie amount doe by the nine directs re of this board,
is but §15.675 06, which would be considered but an inconsiderable sum for either one «f them to owe.
7T>e law requiring a return on cash by the individual directors wiJ not be complied with by them, be
cause they give then services without compensation, and are not enfrequentiy subjected to roach incon
venience by the time lost to ibetn m performing those services. There nas always been some difficulty
m geuir-g the sera ices of proper individual*. arid those willing to serve are not disposed to assume more
cane* than are absolutely necessary to eflVi the object of then service*.
This Bank, since the first day of March last, has strictly contormed to the law which proscribes the sale
of Exchange at a higher rate than two per cent.; but the consequence of me law has been that the Banks
r ave been precluied Irom dea..cg at all in Exr hange. Brokers and Trust Companies, baring no compe
tition in ibe market, are able to controi Exchange* to suit their own interests ; and instead of having Ex
change on Use North now, at or near per, as it ought to he, with the large amount of prodoc; g jing to
market, and as it in all probability would have been, but tor this proscription of the Banks, it is now sell
ing readily at six per cent, premium.
We are making good progress with our Road ; we hope to have it complete to the Sandersville summit,
in time for the Fail business; and iron aas been purchased and i§ now daily arriving sufficient io com
plete the road to within seven roue* of the Oconee nver.
I am. Sir, very respectfully, your obedient §ervant,
W W. Goal K)S, President.

Mr. Ernevpi'tsch, the Rector of the Acadeaj,
already favorably known to the community, tis
charge of the Classical department and a I! me
branches of education requisite for admissrin to
our best Colleges. His attainments as a scholr
and success in imparting useful knowledge. ex>
nently qualify him for the discharge of the im
portant duties of his station.
Mr. Ring, the principal English Tea her. re
cently engaged by the Board, comes with the high
est recommendations as to character, talents, lite
rary attainments and skill m teaching, and the
Trustees feel assured that he wilt sustain tie re
putation which led to his selection.
The branch of the Academy at Summerville is
under the immediate management of Mr. Frank
lin Ge s.ge. a gentleman of experience in teach

the location of this branch of the Academy in one
of the most healthful neighborhoods in tbe State,
and sufficiently remote from the unfavorable in
fluence of a crowded town, are 100 well knottc to

On trie whole, the Board confidently recoin mend
to the public the principal Academy and the Branch
