Died, in Burke County, on the night If the 7th
inst., after a lingering affliction of se\ Iral years,
Mr. John Carpenter, in the 56th year iff his age.
Mr. C. was a native of Burke County where he
had lived all his life, justly esteemed a d beloved
by a large circle of friends and acquaint: ices. He
was a man of sterling integrity, irrr Teachable
morals and general benevolence. Uibendingly
opposed to every thing vicious—a staiiich friend
to the needy and the good —proverbial lor his up
right and uniform deportment, and in tie rare ex

Mr. C. was a very modest man, and if very re
tiring manners. This may have been the reason
that he never joined any church; but those who
knew him best, know that he did m p forget his
duty to that God at whose tribunal he had to ap
pear. He was a man of prayer, and so i some time
has been looking forward to the end of |n afflictive
life. A few hours before he died, he grayed that
his daughter, her husband and chiidreß, might all
meet him in Heaven; and then, after a ?ittle, “ the
weary wheels of life stood still.” [
