To Lours Offon Goelicke, M. D., of Germany,

bv manv of the faculty, (of which lie is a valuable
member,) be proves to be as well founded in truth

verity of which are suspended the lives of millions j
oi out race, and which he boldly challenge, his op
posers to refute, viz ; Consumption is a disease al

(or Life Principle) of the human body: (Ty often
secretly lurking in the system for years before
there is the least complaint of the Lungs £0 — a nd
which may be as certainly, though not so quickly,
as a common cold or a simple headache. An
invaluably precious doctrine this, as it imparts an
important lesson to the apparently healthy of both 1
sexes, teaching them that this insidious foe may
be an unobserved inmate of their “ clayey houses’'
even while they imagine themselves secuus iiom
its attacks, teaching them that the great secret in the

A rertihcale from three members of the Medical
'Profession in Germany, in Europe.
Vv’e, the undersigned, practitioners ol medicine
In Germany', are weil aware that, by our course, >
we may forfeit the friendship of some of tin iacui
ty, but not of its benevolent members, who are un
influenced bv selfish motives, ihough we snail
refrain from an expression ol our opinion, citnei
of the soundness or unsoundness of Dr. uuelick s
neve doctrine, we are happy to say that we deem
his Sanative too valuable not to be generally
known —for what ouv eyes behold and our ears
hear, we must believe.
We Hereby sta e, that when Dr. Lours Ollen
Gee lick first came before the German public, as
the pretended discoverer of a new doctrine and a
new medicine, we held him in the highest con
tempt, believing and openly' pronouncing him to be
a base impostor :u d the prince ol quacks. Put, on
hearing so much said about the Sanative, against it |
and for it, we were induced, from motives ol cuii- i
osiiy merely, to make trial oi its reputed virtues |
upon a number of our most hopeless patient-.; and ,
we now deem it our bounden duty' (even at the |
expense of self-interest) publicly' to acknowledge j
its efficacy in curing not only' consumption, out j
other fearful maladies, which vve have heretofore j
believed to be incurable. Gur contempt ior the }
discoverer of this medicine was at once swallowed |
up in our utter astonishment at those unexpected |
results; and, as amends lor our abuse ol him, we {
do frankly confess to the world, that vve believe 1
him a philanthropist, who docs honor to the proses- I
sicn, and to our eountiy, which gave him birth.
The recent adoption ol this medicine into some |
o our European hospitals, is a sufficient guaranty •
that it performs all promises. It needed not our
estirnony, for wherever it is used it is its own best
wi ness. HERMAN ETMULLEII, m. d.

Radical Cure ot Henna or Rupture, by Dr.
Chase’s Improved Surgeons’ Trusses.
rsmiE subscriber has opened an office, at Hie Drug
1 store of Messrs. J. J. Robertson & Co., for the
treatment of Hernia or Rupture, by' means of these
ustly celebrated instruments. He has now used
them for nearly' a year, and, didnot delicacy forbid,
he could name several persons who have been radi
cally cured, of this truly' distressing and dangerous
affection, by the use of these Trusses, besides many
others who are in a fair way' of being entirely re
lieved. The following is the language of the com
mittee ol the Philadelphia Medical Society on the
Radical Cure of Hernia.
“ The instruments of Dr. Chase have cllected
the permanent and accurate retention of the in
testines in every case of Hernia observed by' the
committee, without material inconvenience to the
patient, and often under trials more severe than
are usually ventured upon by' those who wearcthcr
trusses; trials that would be imprudent with any
other apparatus known to the committee.”
“ The committee are induced by the foregoing
conclusions to recommend, m strong terras, the in
struments of Dr. Chase to the confidence of
the profession, as the best known means of me
chanical retention in hernia, and as furnishing the
highest chances of radical cure.”
The following is from the Southern Medical and
Southern Journal, published in cur own city.
“ All must admit of the radical cure of hernia,
and that Dr. Chase’s Trusses are decidedly the best
yet invented to elfect the object.”
Pei sons from a distance can have the instruments
applied, upon application at the office, and all ne
cessary information given to enable them to adjus
it themselves. 'The poor, who are laboring under
this affiicting complaint, will be treated gratuitous
ly' upon presenting a certificate, from someresponsi*
ble person, of their pecuniary disability.
The instruments are of all sizes, and applicable
to every variety oi reducible rupture.

TO THE FACULTY AND HEADS OF
FAMILIES.
DR. MILES’ COMPOUND EXTRACT OF
TOMATO —a substitute for Calomel, and
does not belong to the family of quack medicines;
for the reason that the component parts are made
known to the faculty, or any one else that may
wish to know, by r any of the agents keeping them
for sale. Since this discovery so long and anx
iously looked lor, some one in almost the extreme
Noith has advertised a Tomato Pill, purpoiting U
be made from the stalk, a thing not more ausuiu
than for one to offer meal from the corn stalk, to
say nothing of the difficulty of raising the Tomato
so far North.
Dr. Miles, of "Cincinnati, is the proprietor of the
Tomato Pills (proper) for the great benefits of
which, he holds himself bound, and in honor pledg
ed to prove by their use, that they are all that they
I rofess to be, and will do for othets what they
have done for such as mav have used them; as
Jiis is a vegetable of great use, and value, it will
doubtless be valuable information to families to
know that the Yellow are just doubly as valuable
as the Red Tomato, and produces twice as much
of tire hapatine, or active principle, and when used
as a daily vegetable will be found to keep the
• system in much better condition than the other
kind ; many will recollect with what trembling
anxiety calomel has been given to children, and
” how they then wished for a substitute. It has
ion ir been known that the Tomato contained ca
thartic principles, but not until of late was it
asccrtaine J that .ney contained alterative anddiu
, retie properties. The Faculty embrace aud use
the preparation most cheerfully, for the reason that
they know what it is Were it a patent mystery,
, they would be bound to reject the medicine, as they
justly do the one thousand and one cure-alls of the
’ day. If you w ish to cleanse the system with a
mild, sa.e anti-bilious medicine, use the Tomato
Pill, of whicn a supply, we learn, will soon be in
lus city. We all know something aoout tnis.

PETEK*’ VEGETABLE PILLS.
They do indeed restore the health of the body,
because they purify and invigorate the blood, and
then good effects are nut counterbalanced by any

salutary ; they arc daily and safely administered to
inlaiicy, youth, manhood and old age, and to wo

they do nut disturb or shock the animal functions,
but restore their order and re-establish their health;

common and disagreeable‘-ills the flesh is heir to.”
This prize obtains its own name from the certain
success Inch has attended it through all of its
trying c cumstances, namely, “five days,”—the
same su ess which followed it in a Northern lati- ,
tude still obtains in a more Southern. The formula
or recipe was obtained at great expense, intrigue
and hazard by M. Chevcres, from the celebrated
i Indian Chief Wabenothe, or Great Moon, whilst
i he, with others was pursuing the lucrative Fur bu
siness in the North-west with the Indians. —
Wabenoshe prized highly and use it with invariable
success throughout bis two tribes. Its known and
valued virtues have already enriched to an almost
incredible extent the children of this warlike prince,
i not only by' actual sale of the article itself to in
dividuals, but by parting with copies of his receipt
at enormous prices to the Chief of every' tribe of )
Indians in America, with a solemn promise to the
Great Spirit, never to divulge the “art of its com
position until he sleeps with his fathers,” although
free to use it in their respective tribes, which
places it in the hands of every Indian who rely
with, 1 may' say, religious confidence on its cura
ble powers
Below is a copy of the translation as near as it can j
be anglisizcd of the deed gi>en by Wabenoshe, to

and had twice assisted the Chief himself through !
the tedious manipulatory process of manufacture. I
Few white men would credit the length of time
which is consumed in preparing the article for im

The LII E .MEDICINES recommend themselves
in diseases ol every form and description. Their
| first operation is to loosen from the coals ol the
stomach and bowels, the various impurities and
crudnies eon tantly settling around them ; aim to
remove the hardened fajees which collect
cunvoiusions of the smallest intestines. Other
medicines only partially cleanse these, and leave
such collected masses behind as to produce liabitu
al cos’.iver.tss with 11 its train of evils, or in a sud
den diarrhoea, with its eminent iangers. This tact
is well known to ail regular anatomists, who ex
amine the human bowels after death; and hence

cond effect ot the Life Medicines is to cleanse the
kidneys and the bladder, and by this means, the
liver and the lungs, the healthful action of which
entirely depends upon the regularity of the urinary
organs. The blood, which lakes its red color from
the agency of the liver aud the lungs before il
passes into the hea t, being thus purified by them

PETERS’ VEGETABLE PILLS.
rjMiESE Fills are no huger among those of
JL doubtful utility. They have passed away
from the hundreds lhat arc daily launched upon
the tide of experiment, and now stand before the
public as high in reputation, and as extensively
employed in all parts of the United States, the Can
adas, Texas, Mexico, and the West Indies, as any
n.edictne that has ever been prepaied for the relief
of suffering man. 'i hey have been int'oduced
wherever il was found possible to carry them ; and
there are but lew towns that do not contain some
remarkable evidences of their good effects The
certificates that have been presented to the proprie

dred oi which are from regular practising physicians,
who are the most competent judgi s of their merits.
Often have the cures performed hy this medicine
been the subject 01 editorial comment in vatious
newspapers and journals ; and it may with truth
be asserted, lhat no me heme of the kind lias ever
received testimonials of gn ater value than are at

They are in general use as a family medicine,
and there are thousands of families who declare
they are never satisfied unless they have a supply
always on hand.
They have no rival in curing and preventing
Bilious fevers, Fever and Ague, Dyspepsia, Liver
Complaints, Bick Headache, Jaundice, Asthma,
Dropsy, Rheumatism, Enlargement of the Spleen,
Files,,Cholic, f emale Obstructions, Heartburn, 1 ur

HERMITAGE EXTRACT.—This lately in
