AS ORDINANCE.
As Ordinance, to amend the tilth clause of the
i thirty-fifth section of the General Ordinance, re-
I Jative to certain taxes.
Be it ordained by the City Council of Augusta,
nd it is hereby ordained by the authority of the
nine. That stocks of taxable merchandise brought
p this City and expi-sed for sale, after the period
f masing returns, shall be subject to the payment
a tax of a quarter of one percent, on the value
hereof, which value shall be the cost of the same,
t nd shall be ascertained by tiie oath ol the owner
hereof or his agent, who shall be called on by the
;itv Marshal to make a return of the value of such
neo handise on oath ; and on failure of such agent
[ir owner, to make such return on oalli, the City
Jdaishal shall pioceed to fix the value according to
tbe best evidence to be obtained, and levy the tax
accordingly.
Sec 2. And be it farther ordained by the au
thority aforesaid , That all Ordinances, and parts

be. and the same are hereby repealed.

AN ORDINANCE.
An Ordinance, imposing a Tax on sales at Pub
lic Auction.
Be it ordained by the City I ouncil of Augusta,
end it is hereby oraained by the authority of tne
tme, That tbeie shall be a tax of two per cent,
imposed on the amount of sales hereafter made at
publO auction, within the corporate limits of the
I City of Augusta, except on real estate, negroes,!
; and shares of the capital stock of banking, or other |
joint stock companies, the tax on svhicn shall be
one half of one per cent.; but no tax*shall be le
vied on sales made by virtue of ’egal process, or by
exccufors, administrators, or guardians.

AN ORDINANCE.
An Ordinance to create the office of Superintendent
of Streets, Drains, Water-works, Stc., and to fix
the salaiy of the same.
Be it ordained by the City Council of Augusta ,
and it is hereby ordain.d by the authority of the
same: That on the first Saturday in every year,
the City Council will elect an officer, to be known
as the Superintendent of Streets, Drains. Water
woiks, and all other public works, when ordered,
under the direction of the Mayor and Council; to
hold his office for one year, and until his successor
ibali be appointed, with a salary ol eight hundred
dollars per annum, and that during the existence
of I his Ordinance, the office of Street Officer be
abolished.

AN ORDINANCE. i
An Ordinance, amendatory of the sth clause of the i
36th section of the General Ordinance.
“ There shall be annually appointed eight good
and efficient men, who shall be known and denom
inated the City Watch. The said City Watch shall
be mustered at the Guard room at S’clock on every
evening, and shall be under the control and direc
tion of the City Marshal, whose duty it shall be to
detail for patrol duty four; he shall prescribe their
route and direct the time of service, when they
shall be relieved by the remaining four. Each indi
vidual of said City Watch shall be paid one dol or
per night for each and every night of service ren
dered, from and after the Ist Saturday in January
next.”

AN ORDINANCE.
All Ordinance to levy a Tax on Equestrian Ex
hibitions, and for other purposes.
Be it ordained by the City Council of Augusta,
and it is hereby ordained by the authority of the
same, That fiom and after the passage of this Or
dinance, there shall be a tax levied on ail eques
trian exhibitions for pay, at the Circus or else
where, in the City of Augusta, of ten dollars for
eveiy time such exhibition shall be presented, if
between sunrise and sunset; such exhibi
tion take place after sunset, the tax on the same
shall be twenty dollars for every time of perform
ance, to be collected daily by the City Marshal.
Sec 2. And be it further ordained by the author
ity afore said, That if the aforesaid tax shall not
be paid to the City Marshal on demand, execution
shall issue forthwith against the property of the
person or persons liable for the same.*
Sec 3. And be it further ordained by the author
ity aforesaid, That all ordinances and parts of ordi
nances militating against this ordinance, be, and the
same are hereby repealed.

AN ORDINANCE.
An Ordinance levying a tax on merchandize sold
on commission or at private sale, not returned
at the usual period, Ac.
Be it ordained by the City Council of Augusta,
and it is hereby ordained by the authority of the
tame, That fiom and after the first ol January
nest, there shall be a lax of one eighth of one p; r
cent, on all taxable merchandise sold on commis
iion at private sale in the City of Augusta, which
may not have been returned for taxation at the
usual period; and that it shall be the duty of ail
persons who may have sold any such goods on com
mission, to embrace all such sales in his or her next
tax returns, and to pay the tax hereby imposed
thereon at the period of paying his or her tax there
after.
Bec. 2. And be it farther o r dained by the <xu
thority aforesaid. That il any person or persons
shall neglect or refuse to make such return, he or
they shall be subject to the same penalty as per
com making default in ihe return of the general
ax-'ts as provided for in the 34th section of the
Ordinance.

hereby set apart Thursday, the thirty-tiist day ol ■
this month, a« a day of Public Thanksgiving to
Almighty God for again blessing our city with its
accustomed goon health, and do also eat neatly re
commend all citizeni to suspend their usual busi
ness and assemble in their icspective places of
worship, to render unto Him their united tribute ot
thanks for this great blessing, and to supplicate a
continuance of Divine favor for our City and

10 dollar bill on the Bank of Columbus, two on
the Georgia Rail Road Bank, one 10 and one sdol
lar bill—the one for aon the Bank of Hamburgh,
the others not recollected ; in all about forty-three
dollars. It also contained the following notes :
One on Benjamin Pine for twm hundred and seventy
nine dollars and forty-eight cents; one onC.C. Tal
iaferro for eighty-six dollars and fifty cents, dated
14th December, 1840; one on C. Salm for fifty-six
dollars and forty cents; one on Dennis Josephs for
fifty dollars—the above named persons reside in
Augusta; one on William ealhoun, of Georgia, for
ninety-five dollars; two on J. J. Fester, of South
Carolina, one for about fifty and the other for fifty -
eight dollars, with a credit of forty-four dollars on
it; one on Mr. Teag, of the same State, a:nou t
not recollected; one on Sibley k Cook, of Ham
burg, amount not recollected; the receipt of John
M. Cooper k Son for a note on William C. Wiley,
of Cass county, Georgia, for four hundred and’
twenty six dollars; Thomas Chatin’s two receipts,
one for a note of seventy five dollars on Hezekiah
Ellington, of Georgia, and the other for a note or.
