THE Board of Trustees of the GREENSBORO
MALE and FEMALE ACADEMIES, take
great pleasure in informing the public, that the
exercises of these Institutions will be resumed on
the first Monday in January next. They will still
be under Tie supervision. of their former able and
experienced teachers, M*. C. P. B. Martin and
Miss A. P. H \milton. !
The Board feel prepared, from their acquaint
ance with Mr. Martin ;|.nd Miss Hamilton, and
with their sy'stem of discipline and mode of impart
ing instruction, to recommend to the patronage of
all who have children to educate, and wish them
well educated. The Institutions are furnished with
an extensive and efficient Philosophical, Chymical
and Astronomical apparatus, which makes the
business of communicali|ig and receiving instruc
tion a pleasure, where?*, without this facility, it
would often become a task.
The village of Greensboro, in which these In
stitutions are located, is. surpassed by none in the
State, for the healthiness!of its climate, the agree
ableness of its society, a ; ‘d the good moral charac
ter of itx citizens.
We, therefore, most respectfully invite all pro
moters of the cause of education, to visit our town,
examine our Schools, ami then we have no doubt
of receiving their patronage.

lative to certain taxes.

and it is hereby ordained by the authority of thv

same: That on the first Saturday in every year,
the City Council will elect an officer, to be known
as the Superintendent of Streets, Drains. Water
woiks, and all other public worl s, when ordered,
under the direction of the Mayor and Council; to
hold his office for one year, and until his successor
shall be appointed, wkb a salary ol eight hundred
dollars per annum, ard that during the existence
of (his Ordinance, the office of Street Officer be
abolished.

‘ l There shall be annually appointed eight good
| and efficient men, who shall be known and denom
inated the City Watch. The said City Watch shall
be mustered at the Guard room at B’clock on every ,
evening, and shall be under the control and direc
tion of the City r Marshal, whose duty it sha ll be to
detail for patrol duty four; he shall prescri be their
route and direct the time of service, when they
shall be relieved by the remaining four. Each indi
vidual of said City Watch shall be paid one dollar
per night for each and every ni£ht of service ren
dered, from and after the Ist Saturday in January
next.”

An Ordinance to levy a Tax on Equestrian Ex
hibitions, and for other purposes.
Be it ordained by the City Council of Augusta,
and it is hereby ordained by the aui hor ity of the
same. That from and after the passage of this Or
dinance, there shall be a tax leviecl on all eques
trian exhibitions for pay, at the C ircus or else
where, in the City of Augusta, of ten dollars for
eveiy time such exhibition shall be presented, if
between sunrise and sunset; and if such exhibi
. tion take place after sunset, the tax on the same
shall be twenty dollars for eveiy time of perform
ance, to be collected daily by the City Marshal.
B ec. 2. And be it further ordained by the author
ity afore said. That if the aforesaid tax shall not
be paid to the City Marshal on demand, execution
shall issue forthwith against the property of the
person or persons liable for the same.
Sec. 3. And be it further ordained by the autbor
; ity aforesaid, That all ordinances and parts of ordi
nances militating against this ordinance, be, and the
same are hereby repealed.

An Ordinance levying a tax on merchandize sold
on commission or at private sale, not returned
at the usual period, itc.
Be it ordained by the City Council of Augusta r
and it is hereby ordained by the authority of the
same. That from and after the first of January
next, there shall be a lax of one eighth of one per
cent, on all taxable merchandise sold on commis
sion at private sale in the City of Augusta, which
may not have been returned for taxation at the
usual period; and that it shall be the duty of ail
persons who may have sold any such goods on com
mission, to embrace all such sales in his or her next
I tax returns, and to pay the tax hereby imposed
j thereon at the period of paying his or her tax therc-
I after.
Sec. 2. And be it further ordained by the au
i thority aforesaid. That if any person or persons I
shall neglect or refuse to make such return, he or
they shall be subject to the same penalty as per
rons making default in the return of the general
1 taxes, as provided for in the 34th section of the
Geneial Ordinance.
