For the Align Ha Chronicle.
I HAVE known a man of phin under
standing, upon the verge of infamy aud
ruin, through a mlj'nk* of bis natural and ac
quired endowment#. Tbs person I allude to,
was many years ago a petty arbitrator among
pedlars and inn-kcepers, in l-.ttle differences
of accorupts and rcckomng3; and in this
fpherc he figured among a certain clays , as a
in at) •weil versed and hackneyed in the way 9
and tru/ct of the world. In tfcis career of
policy lie was equal and confident with him*
felf; but the unhappy situation of his coun
try, at a critical juncture, unluckily induced
him to afliime the military garb * The prin
ciple was good, but the tntfehief wan, chat
Ire believed himlelf to be a foldicr without the
education or spirit of one; in this one fatal
circumstance, he beheld himfelf wretched to
a degree. Had he reflected for a moment,
that a blue coat and Snarhke badges are poor
emblems of the God of war without the re
thereal spirit of one, he would have continued
to the intricate concerns and duties of com
mittal ies and pedlars. What followed this
change of situation ? This deluded man foou
found to h 0 mortification, that military attire,
a (word and gnu, were made for use as welt as
shew ; and when the day ol trial can\e —when
ornaments were badges of utility, and the
man who yvoie them lliould have signalized
his courage by an ardor in his country’s
cause, •vtiely fecludcd himfelf within the wall*
of Suubury, to divert himfelf with cricket
play, and to lampoon men far better than
himfelf. ldis grand aim for many years
pad has been, to impose himfelf upon the
•weaker part of mankind, lora great poet and
a knowing man ; his formal call, hypocritical
phizz, demure afpett, and clouded blow,
have ever denoted his deceitful worm-eaten
heart, with sometimes an uplifting, and now
and then a downfall eye. Thde are the vi
sible and outward figws of this wjnatrons
animal, who, transported from 'Bilingfgate,
has transposed fentenecs of borrowed poetry,
to hi ter falfeboo<i*> call tmoeferved reproach
on a laudable inititution, and to load the
membets with libaldry, opprobrium and
abide. How much have my fellow citizens
to lament, that thisfquahd poet did not ex
ert his abilities in the field; and how con
temptible mull he link in the eyes of the
* world when ihcy reflfitt, that his spirit was
alone toufed, when the occaiion required nei
ther prowess noi Iticngth, and when a victory
even upon a fair plan-mult brand the victor
with disgrace.
1 lhail portray this intruder by stating. a
case in point •hree men are engaged in
debate upon the propriety of any particular
import, two of the parties agree, and one of
them withdraws, leaving the difeufiion to the
two leiuainiug difputints ; what would be
the feelings of a.gentleman, if a conceited eif
fliould otficioufly interfere, and abruptly ad
vance to ouc of the parties, and call him a
fool, puppy, bear, or figure with (uch speci
