POET R Y.
E P I ' T A P H,
Found in the Church Yard of St • Pancras,
GO, spotless honor, and unsullied truth'i
Go, smiting innocence and blooming
youth :
Go, female sweetness, joiu’d with inanly
feufe :
Go, winning wit, that never gave offence :
Go, foft humanity, that bled the poor ;
Go, faint-ey’d patience from affiiditWs door;
Go, modesty, that never wore a frown;
Go, virtue, and receive thy heav’nly crown;
Not from a flrangdr came this heart-felt
vetfe,
Thy friend inferibes thy tomb, whose tears
bedew’d thy hearse.
A fenjible jeafonoble Anecdote%
SOME time ago a travelling rcligioriift,
from Rhode-Ifland, came to Carlifle,
watted on Dr; Nelbit, and requested leave of
him to read in the Prelbyterean church, on
the Lord’s day, an account of a remarkable*
reviving of religion in the (late he camCfrom.
The Do&or aike*d him what effert this re
viving bad upon the converts; as to their mo
ral honesty, and whether they - continued' to
pay their debts with paper money-Or iwr?To
this the man replied, they paid 'th£iY debts
according to the law of the (late. Then the
Dv. replied to this effed: “ You shall not
have my leave to read any account of a re
viving of religion that* does not make people
houeft.” For that religion is not from the
spirit of GoJ, but from the devil, that is not
founded on moral honesty ; and wherever thik
is not the case, it plainly indicates a decieu
fion rather than a revival of religidb.
