TRENTON, Nov. 8. I
On Friday, a motion was made in the I
house of ailembly, by a republican mem- I
ber, that a mdTage be sent to council, in- B
forming that body, that the house were I
ready to go into a joint meeting for the 9
purpjfe of appointing a Governor and a ■
Chief Justice. *
This motion was opposed by the fede- I
ral party in the house; and was defeated ■
by their negativing the previous question. I
From present appearances, therefore, I
there is little room to expeft that a go- I
vernor will be appointed this year. In B
such case the vice-president is invefled, by ■
the Bth lection of the conllitution of B
New-Jersey, with all the powers and at. B
tributes which attach to the office of go. B
vernor. As the vice.prefident is an in- I
flexible republican, and as the appoint- B
ment of fcnator, if not made by joint B
meenting, will devolve upon him, the 8
republicans can lofc nothing by the obfti. I
nacy of their opponents, but the pleasure I
of re-appointing their present governor. 9
While any injury or inconvenience, which 9
may accrue to the state or to individuals, B
from the want of a governor, will be S
juflly chargeable to the federal party, 8
who, without llrength fufficient to appoint I
another, in the lirfl instance prevented 9
the re-appointment of the present go- 9
vernor, and in the second refilled even to 'll
allow an opportunity of making a choice. |

Authentic information has been receiv- I
ed at the feat of government that the re- |
port lately circulated, flaring an intend- ;
on on the part of the officers commanding |i
certain French frigates, to land a number ||
of negroes on the coalt of South-Caroli- 9

that measures have been taken to puniffi 1
the author of the report; relying on the |
most authentic information, we feel it
our duty, farther to state, that the sa

commanding general of the militia of that

negroes being landed as reported, that g
not any of them should be made prison- ;;
ers, but that they ftiould be indiferimi- 9
