from the American L itenfmjjjBd r vertifer t
printed at the City of Washington,
The war being over, the capi
tal of the Englirti monied intemij will
no longer be abforhed by that devou|big
Scourge. It must therefore look foj o
thcr markets, and the world certainly af
fords not so fine a field for the appropri
ation of surplus capital as the UniiM m
States. We arc not therefore fupprifcd tM|
hear that Joseph Nourfe, Esq. Register of
the Treasury, Ihould receive this week
direction from his Englilh correfpondcnts
to purchase one hundred lots in this city.
Were foreigners always equally wife in
the choice of their agents, they would
not so commonly have cause to ccrfurc the
Americans for the want of that punctuali
ty which forms the mod honorable part of
the Englifli character. We understand
that Mr. N. has completed the above
purchase at the fuperintendant's sale,
-which he is now making, for the purpose
of raising the sum of £O,OOO dollars, due
to the Rate of Maryland. Wc wifli such
of our friends as have a little spare ca(h
on hand, to attend to thefc falcs, as at
the present felling prices of lors, it is not
a bold alfcrtion to fay, perhaps so advan
tageous a mode of laying out money, may
never again occur.
Although this city affords at present a
fair field forfpcculation, foreign capitalists
mutt neccffarily look more to the lands be
longing to the U. States in the Norch-
Weitcrn Territory, and to those in that
immenfc traCt fiirrendered by the ttate of
to the United States. The suc
cess of Mr. Pultney in Genneflee, though
with fewer advantages than either of those
countries possess, will stimulate Britilh
capital, Mr, P. is said now to possess a
bout one fifth of the original purchase,. and
by the sale of the other four fifths, to have
netted upwards of one million of Ncw
' York pounds. In the North-Western
Territory, land purchased of the United
-States, in a fine climate, bleffcd with a
rich foil, and productive rivers, abound,
ing in rich fait mines, and probably many
valuable minerals, may on an average be
said to double its value every seven years,
a But the diftriCt ceded by Georgia, a
bovc all, is moll important. It Contains
the bell cotton lands in the world. ’ It is
the properest objeCl therefore for the em
ployment of surplus capital, because cot
ton is the great American staple, and its
life in the different manufactories of Eu
rope is every day encrealing. The land
lowly valued, which formerly belonged to
Georgia* but now the United States, is
more than adequate to the difeharge of
the national debt. Its value must greatly
increase from our encreafed population.
'Let the United States pursue what policy
Ihe will; let her again be afflicted with
all the follies of Fedcralifm, it is not in
her power to prevent the migration of the
Itarvmg people of Europe hither. The
war is over. The small-pox is no longer
to he dreaded. The people of Europe
must therefore encreafe, as long as the
pafflons of man exist : it follows that her
extra population mutt either Itarve or mi
grate, Whither can they fly with equal
advantage a$ to the United States; here
is room for all the inhabitants of the
world. Let us then continue to receive
emigrants with that kindness which (ball
,-it once attach them to our foil, rather
than by opprellion render a body of men,
which we cannot prevent from being nu
morons, at enmity with our eftablilhments
and laws.
