President Davis.—It was reported
through our city, lato Saturday evening,
that lion. Jefferson Davis, President of
the late Southern Confederacy, was then
in Atlanta, and would pass through Ma
rietta, on the 11 o’clock train, that night,
for Chattanooga. This was enough.—
The citizens learned tho news with pleas
ure, and on tho arrival of tho train men
tioned, a largo crowd of ladies and gen
tlemen wore at tho depot, eager to catch
a word or glimpso of tho noble old Chief
tain of tho '* Lost Cause.” No sooner
had tho train stopped, than the enthusi
astic crowd began to Rliout loudly for
“Davis I Davis;! ” When it was ascer
tained that ho was in llio sleeping car,
tho icultitudo thronged aroniul it and
rcuoatod tho calls, while tho Silver Cor
net Band discoursed most excellently tile
beloved old tune, “ Dixie.” Mr. Davis,
at this juncture, raised tho window of
tho car and was greeted with “ three
