A lady residing in the West End, and
not far from Portland place, hail a ser

terest, partly because of her sympathetic
nature, and' partly because she had re
ceived faithful service front her. This
domestic, as the manner of domestics
now i«, (generally by stipulation andoon-
tract), had a follower named John Arm
strong. To all appearance he was a re-
B|»eetalile man, and perfectly noobjee-
tionuble in every particular. So confi
dent was she of his excellent character,
from his appearance, that the girl’s mis
tress allowed his visit* without the slight
est hesitation, and took an interest in the
girl’s welfare—being anxious, as she ex-
preseed ft, fo see her comfortably settled,

The influence of climate upon civiliza

than studied. Otherwise, we should
know how it is that some countries that
have so much climate have no civiliza
tion.

If it were ns easy to invent a credible
falsehood as it is to believe one, we should
see little olso in print. The mechanical
construction of falsehood is n matter of the
gravest import; a lie which in sober nar

“done up like new” iu a pungejit epi

A Southern paper relates n laughable
incident connected with the visit of tbe
Joint High Commission to Harper’s
Ferry. The presence of the distin
guished party attracted a large nuiuber
of citizens anxious to obtain a peep at
at they it le d visitors, and among them was
a pompons old gentleman somewhat
noti'd for bis venerable appearance, flu
ency of speech, and strict conservative
principles, who was conspicuous iu his
endeavors to make himself agreeable.
Attaching himself especially to a gentle
man w lio was evidently one of tbe most
prominent of the i>Arty , he took occas
ion to remark in oratorioal tones: “ I
am happy to see you gentlemen of
England. As an American citizen I Canu
te pay ray respects to you, but I waut
nothing to do with those d—d Yankees
with whom you are associated.” The
geutlemau addressed, and those of the
visitors within hearing, appeared to en
joy the remark hugely, but tho old gen
tleman himself was intensely disgusted
l he was informed that he had been
with Gen. Bchenck.

It is only u few yearM^^^^^R out
cry was made against thewHHVcattle,
and several of the States mode haste to
exclude them by stringent legislative en
actments. From the noise made on the
subject it might have been inferred that
the whole stock was diseased, and a
plague, at least, would follow their intro
duction to the northern markets. Like
a great many humbugs, this had its day;
but an i ffort to revive the senseless panic
would now be received with a shout of
derision. It was evidently prompted by
a few clever operators, who feared the
competition of this then new field of sup
ply, and were not slow to work np a pre
judice that would operate in their own
favor. All the actual dangers from the
importation grew out of the fact that a
few lots were packed like herriugs iu rail
road cars, forwarded hundreds of miles
without either food or drink, and then
suddenly distended to their utmost ca
pacity as a preparation for salo in the
market. The wonder was not that
a few wer discusi d, but that any sur
vival sit; ii hrutal treatment. Northern
catth sent to Texas in the same maufter
would have perished long before they
reached there.
The real trouble soon became manifest,
and since we hear no more of “prevail
ing di.-casra ” in a class of *tock particu
larly adapted to tho Western plains—and
naturally as healthy as nuy in tho world—
by the use of a recently discovered pro
cess immense supplies of liecf are now
put up in Texas, and preserved in a per
t'octly fresh condition until they reach
tho Atlantic cities, and even Europe.
But the great movement is towards Kuu
sob and Nebraska. The herds now on
the way to th< States are estimated at
half a million head; nor will this ag
gregate surprise any one who has boen
iu that section of country. They are
generally young stock, and in a fow
months will commence pouring into
market from these States, furnishing the
finest quality of meat, which will be pur
chased by the masses of thu people with
out a thought of the source from whence
it was originally drawn. The interest,
for a new one has alroady attained to a
vast magnitude, and miiHtyearl.yincrea.se
to keep pace with the growth of the
country. They occupy the old buffalo
pMstim**, and are destined to replace that
N|KM*ies, along the whole frontier line.
Texas will be the breeding, and Kansas
the grazing grounds, for the fnture; and
in addition to cheap supplies for the
the Eiintern States, every suction will

are good, and his thighs very long

us of the description and portrait of
English Eclipse. His thighs are like
those of Lexington. Cast-steel look
ing legs, clean as a foal’s, are under
him. His head is just the sort wc
like to see—not small, nor tapering
otT to a snout, but large, resolute, with
big nostrils. It is lean and l>ony, and
wide between the eyes. His neck is
strong and muscular, and he has the
perfect game-cock throttle, the wind
pipe large, and loose below the meaty
part of the neck until it enters the
chest. The plates of the jaws are
rather deep, which denotes hard stick
ing, and very wide apart, which is
one of the essentials to clear wind.
His eyos are large, bold and full.
We were much impressed by this
colt—so targe, well furnished, syni-
etrical, and blood-like. Interest in
the new-comer did not cause us to
forget oar old friends. Dexter is big

as ready as ever to take a wagon and
