To-day was the great international
race—Canada (or America) ngainat Eng
land.
At 7:26 Urn lioata Blurted and ran with
fluctuating advantage lor fifteen minuteu,
when the Engliah crew pulled for land.
It was fonnd that ltenforth, the cham
pion oarsman of England and atroke of
the English boat hod a fit, and in an
hoar he was pronounced dead.
The Paris crew walked over the course
in 40m. 11s.
The English crews may amalgamate
carry all before them or tho original
Renforth crew may re-organize ns fol
lows, with Bright, their odd man. Bob
Chambers I. Percy ' 2. Bright 3, and
Harry Kelley 4 or (stroke). In either
cose onr English visitors will be found
hard to beat.
The excitement here is tremendous—
Bcnforth’s death is attributed to overex
ertion and over excitement. Others at

the first race—time 1511.
There was tremendous interest in the
great race between Longfellow and Helm
bold. Daring the first 3 milt* Longfel
low gained from one to two lengths.
Helmbold )>eg&n to gain on the last
ighth of the third mile and passed under
the striug half a length ahead. Lonfel
low lost Hteadily during the lust mile,
Helmbold leading him three lengths at
the first quarter, six at the half mile, and
finishing sixteen lengths ahead, amid the
most tremendous enthusiasm and cheers.

The retail dealers, however, must affix
the necessary stamps to the articles.
Domestic subscriptions to tho new loan
to-day amount to over $6,000,000.

The area of the highest pressure ex
tends from South Carolina to Maine, but
the barometer, after rising somewhat ij

er have continued during the day from
the Continent to Virginia. Tho area of
low presure for tho coast of Georgia af
ter causing heavy rains and brisk easterly
winds, has veiy rapidly disappeared.—
Cloudy and threatening weather is now
ported in northern Florida, with south-
Ty winds. The barometer has fallen
during tho day from the lower Lakes to
Lake Superior, after having risen con
siderably during tho night Cloudiness
has increased from Michigan to New
York, and local storms have been report
ed from Michigan to Missouri.
Tho barometer will probably continue
to fall, with light rains to-night. Clear
weather will probably continue ou Thurs
day from Michigan to Louisiana and
westward. Paitiallv cloudy and clear
weather, with fresh winds is probable for
the middle and South Atlautic States.

St. John, August 23.—The great four-
oared race for the championship of tho
world came off this morning. The bouts
started at 7:25 and led alternately for five
minutes. At 7:33 the St John was
ahead; at 7:40 tho 8t. John was the
only crew rowing, the Tyne crew having
gouo ashore in consequence of ltenforth
being taken with a fit. Thu St. John's
crew rowed over the course winuer in for
ty minutes and eleven seconds. Ren
forth died this morning at half paat

lishes a report, founded upon the state
ment of Detective Colonel Woods in or
der that tho Golden Rule was purposely
wrecked in 1800, that over a million dol
lars in treasure belonging to the United
States might he stolen. According to
Woods’ narrative, Montgomery Gibbs
managed the affair.

er Blaine and others, so there is no use
pursuing him further.
Felix Darcy cut his wife’s throat, made

aged nine and ten, and then committed
suicide. Tho children say their father
has been subject to fits of derangement
for six months.
