Nashville, September 15.—The train
bearing the Knights Templar failed to
make the connection at Chattanooga, and
there were apprehensions that wo won’.d
have to lie over; but a special train was
speedily provided, by wbicb we reached
Nashville in good time. All tho party
arrived safely and all are well and seem
to be enjoying themsclvri wonderfully.
The trip promises to be a moit agreeable
one. The number of Sir Knigbts is in
creasing all the time, and we expect to
have a very large crowd before we get to
Baltimore. We leave for Louisville at

Washington, September 15.—No cot
ton crop reports purporting to Imvo come
from the Department of Agriculture dic
ing the moulh, have beeu genuine. The
items in circulation, often contradictory
in tenor, assumed to be official, have had
no origin in the statistical data in that
office.
The returns of August and September
include reports from about four hundred
cotton growing corn tin, rcpr< renting a
very largo proportion of tho cotton area.
Those for August point to an average
condition of the crop, almost identical
with that of tho preceding report; the
averages for Alabma and Mississippi
be'ng the same; those of Lor’sianu, /•-
kausus and Tennessee being higher, and
those of the other cotton States lower.
Tho Shite averages of tho September
report are somewhat lower than those of
August, though tho principal deprecia
tion occurs iu the States which yield a
small proportion of the crop; while the
reduction is slight in the important dis
trict represented by Georgia, Alabama,
Mississippi and Louisiana.

There ore repo.ts of injury by the bo"

sippi and Louisiana; but no evidence that
n general or very serious loss from in
sects is probable. .
Bust is common in the Atlantic States

Droughts have been injurious in the
Curolinas and iu Texas ; though the n-
more unequal than usual. At one point
iu Georgia the fall in amouut was nearly
14 inches, aud in parts of Florida it
amounted to 23 inches. Those vui.able
atmospheric conditions have increased
the prevalence of rest and caused the de
struction both of leaves and fruit.
These drawbacks, though greater than
those reported in September of last year,
are not sufllciently serious to excite op-
preliensii u of t greatly depreciated
portions of the cotton area. Iu the re-
oord of last year there was considerable
complaint ol damage to tho cotton crop
from ruat, worms and uufuvorable Au
gust weather. ,
These facts do not point to an enlarge
ment of tho expectation hitherto in
dulged. Jf they are reliable the most
favorable season could scarcely bring s
crop exceeding three and one-third mT-
lions of bales. If the growing Seaton
should be short or unfavorable, three mil-
ions would be a good resr’t, atul with a
combination of unfavorable circumstan
ces the product might be still further ro-
ducod. . . .
