Soul and Body.
The mysterious union of sonl and body
haa given rise to much speculation
amongst those whose mortal life exempliee
that mystic association; 1 The house we
live in—that is, a tenement of day—
claims, we think, toe much ears front its
present inhabitant, tbs far nobler and
unmortal sonl. We should, indeed, keep
this earthly mansion in convenient re
pair, while spirit which is undying, em
bellishes its (sxttrtfcr, looks out from its
windows, and iivesteitwith life.
But the fault seems to be, that, not too
little, but rather too much, care it devo
ted to that external and decaying inves
titure of fleefa, which, shrivels .with age,
erases to bloom after its spring-time is
past, and, finally, if eeoaping aooident or
disease, suooumbs to feebleness and de
cay. What ia the nse of painting a di
lapidated citadal ? or rappang'it with new
verdure, when its sncienl lichens and
gray moss would better become its stately
battlements, and breve thongh riven
defences?
Apart from metaphor or allegory, let
ns look on middle life advancing into
age, as reasonable beings should. As
fructifying plants present the bloom,
then the more ripened pod or sheaf, and
after that the full corn in the ear, so man
tenderly expands in infancy, advances
into yontb, and matures into manhood
then in full and unreetrained indepen
dence of middle life, he either exalts or
sinks his individual being by treadini
the path of virtue, or, linking himsel'
with his enemies and tho enemiea of his
Creator, treads a downward road,
this period, mind and conscience are, or
should be, hia individual and sole-acting
director. Life's paths are before him,
where to choose, and the privilege
been granted him to ally himself with
angels, or to form those terrible associa
tions which must fix hia iuture destiny.
Enough of li^ht has been given him to
establish a choice, and wo for him if he
is not prepared, having reached it, to de
cide for himself.
We have heard of speculative philoso
phers who talk grandly about laws of
nature—as though nature existed without
God, its author, sod bids tts give heed
only to the perishing body, while its re
splendent inmate, the soul, seems wholly
ignored. Tbs former is for Tine, the
latter for Eternity. What more need be
said to a responsible creature?

The manner of re-reoording those deeds

The statement of Senator Blair regard
ing the alleged Kn-Klnx outrages at the
South is of especial moment at this time,
when the Preeident is debating whether
to yield to the demand for martial law in
Florida and Georgia. Senator Blair It
a member of the Inveetigating Committee,
and Iris estimate of the testimony obtained
is qnite as reliable as that of the other
members who have a strong partisan in
terest to serve in making out a state of
lawlessness. Gen. B) r explodes the
whole theory of political persecution in
few words, declaring that violence exists
in South no more than in other parte of
the country, except in cases where the
people have taken into their own hands
the punishment of eriminals whom the
Government has allowed to go unwhipped
of jnstioe. This is no more than happens
frequently elsewhere, without even a hint
of insurrection or the need of martial law.
Simultaneously with this statement of
Senator Blair, other members of the com
mittee give ont that they have discovered
s rebellion in other States, and caU upon
the Preeident to declare military law in
Georgia and Florida as the last resort
There is sn issue here made up on facts;
and the publio will remember the absurd
mistakes made by the President regarding
the “ rebellion” in South Carolina, and
judge which statement is the more worthy
of credence.—Bouton Pott
